Solitons in microresonators have spurred intriguing nonlinear optical physics and photonic applications. Here, by combining Kerr and Brillouin nonlinearities in an over-modal microcavity, we demonstrate spatial multiplexing of soliton microcombs under a single external laser pumping operation. This demonstration offers an ideal scheme to realize highly coherent dual-comb sources in a compact, low-cost and energy-efficient manner, with uniquely low beating noise. Moreover, by selecting the dual-comb modes, the repetition rate difference of a dual-comb pair could be flexibly switched, ranging from 8.5 to 212 MHz. Beyond dual-comb, the high-density mode geometry allows the cascaded Brillouin lasers, driving the co-generation of up to 5 space-multiplexing frequency combs in distinct mode families. This Letter offers a novel physics paradigm for comb interferometry and provides a widely appropriate tool for versatile applications such as comb metrology, spectroscopy, and ranging.

Spark induced compression ignition (SICI) is a promising method to achieve high thermal efficiency as well as a robust control of combustion. With the increase of compression ratio, the popularization of bioethanol and the development of NO_x emission control technologies for lean combustion, it is easier to realize high-efficiency and clean SICI combustion under medium-to-high load. Combining split injection with various excess air ratio (λ), the effects of ethanol in fuels with the same RON value (93# and 80#E15) on combustion characteristics, indicated thermal efficiency and PN emissions were investigated in a high compression ratio (15.5), single-cylinder, four-stroke engine. For comparison, the performance of pure anhydrous ethanol (E100) was also studied in this engine. The results show that ethanol-contained fuels can accelerate the flame propagation but suppress the heat release rate (HRR) of autoignition, and autoignition does not even exist in E100 combustion. Consequently, CA50 is advanced but combustion duration is prolonged for ethanol-contained fuels. It is highlighted that the predominant contribution of ethanol in improving the indicated thermal efficiency is the optimization of CA50 rather than the combustion iso-volume. In addition, the knock intensity is effectively suppressed, and the combustion process can be optimized by split injection with appropriate EOI2 (the end of the second injection) and split ratio for gasoline and ethanol-blended fuel, which further improve the indicated thermal efficiency. PN emissions exhibit a generally positive correlation with knock intensity in SICI mode and SICI mode can reduce the particles generated by the spray-wall impingement and ultra-rich mixture near the wall. Lean combustion can simultaneously suppress flame propagation and autoignition and is more effective in PN emissions reduction for fuels of 93# and 80#E15 within the cycle-to-cycle variation (COV) limitation rather than E100. However, E100 demonstrates two orders of PN emissions smaller than 93# and 80#E15 due to its high oxygen fraction content.
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and two-dimensional organic and inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskites (2DPVSKs) have emerged as highly promising materials for ultralight and ultrathin optoelectronics application. They both exhibit tunability of electronic properties such as band structure, and they can form heterostructures with various types of two-dimensional materials for novel physical properties not observed in single components. However, TMDCs exhibit poor emission efficiency due to defect states and direct-to-indirect interband transition, and 2DPVSKs suffer from poor stability in ambient atmosphere. Here we report that fabrication of TMDC-on-2DPVSK heterostructures using a solvent-free process leads to novel optical transitions unique to the heterostructure which arise from the hybrid interface and exhibit a strong photoluminescence. Moreover, a two orders of magnitude enhancement of the photoluminescence as compared to WS_2 emission is observed. The TMDC on top of 2DPVSK also significantly improves the stability as compared to bare 2DPVSK. Enhanced emission can be explained by electronic structure modification of TMDC by novel interfacial interactions between TMDC and 2DPVSK materials, which shows promise of the heterostructure for high efficiency and stable optoelectronic devices.
Multiplexing multiple orbital angular momentum (OAM) channels enables high-capacity optical communication. However, optical scattering from ambient microparticles in the atmosphere or mode coupling in optical fibers significantly decreases the orthogonality between OAM channels for demultiplexing and eventually increases crosstalk in communication. Here, we propose a novel scattering-matrix-assisted retrieval technique (SMART) to demultiplex OAM channels from highly scattered optical fields and achieve an experimental crosstalk of –13.8 dB in the parallel sorting of 24 OAM channels after passing through a scattering medium. The SMART is implemented in a self-built data transmission system that employs a digital micromirror device to encode OAM channels and realize reference-free calibration simultaneously, thereby enabling a high tolerance to misalignment. We successfully demonstrate high-fidelity transmission of both gray and color images under scattering conditions at an error rate of <0.08%. This technique might open the door to high-performance optical communication in turbulent environments.
We present accurate fits for the remnant properties of generically precessing binary black holes, trained on large banks of numerical-relativity simulations. We use Gaussian process regression to interpolate the remnant mass, spin, and recoil velocity in the seven-dimensional parameter space of precessing black-hole binaries with mass ratios q ≤ 2, and spin magnitudes χ_1, χ_2 ≤ 0.8. For precessing systems, our errors in estimating the remnant mass, spin magnitude, and kick magnitude are lower than those of existing fitting formulae by at least an order of magnitude (improvement is also reported in the extrapolated region at high mass ratios and spins). In addition, we also model the remnant spin and kick directions. Being trained directly on precessing simulations, our fits are free from ambiguities regarding the initial frequency at which precessing quantities are defined. We also construct a model for remnant properties of aligned-spin systems with mass ratios q ≤ 8, and spin magnitudes χ_1, χ_2 ≤ 0.8. As a byproduct, we also provide error estimates for all fitted quantities, which can be consistently incorporated into current and future gravitational-wave parameter-estimation analyses. Our model(s) are made publicly available through a fast and easy-to-use PYTHON module called SURFINBH.
We have investigated electrochemical treatment of real domestic wastewater coupled with simultaneous production of molecular H2 as useful byproduct. The electrolysis cells employ multilayer semiconductor anodes with electroactive bismuth-doped TiO_2 functionalities and stainless steel cathodes. DC-powered laboratory-scale electrolysis experiments were performed under static anodic potentials (+2.2 or +3.0 V NHE) using domestic wastewater samples, with added chloride ion in variable concentrations. Greater than 95% reductions in chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonium ion were achieved within 6 h. In addition, we experimentally determined a decreasing overall reactivity of reactive chlorine species toward COD with an increasing chloride ion concentration under chlorine radicals (Cl·, Cl2–·) generation at +3.0 V NHE. The current efficiency for COD removal was 12% with the lowest specific energy consumption of 96 kWh kgCOD–1 at the cell voltage of near 4 V in 50 mM chloride. The current efficiency and energy efficiency for H2 generation were calculated to range from 34 to 84% and 14 to 26%, respectively. The hydrogen comprised 35 to 60% by volume of evolved gases. The efficacy of our electrolysis cell was further demonstrated by a 20 L prototype reactor totally powered by a photovoltaic (PV) panel, which was shown to eliminate COD and total coliform bacteria in less than 4 h of treatment.
We present here the annotation of the complete genome of rice Oryza sativa L. ssp. japonica cultivar Nipponbare. All functional annotations for proteins and non-protein-coding RNA (npRNA) candidates were manually curated. Functions were identified or inferred in 19,969 (70%) of the proteins, and 131 possible npRNAs (including 58 antisense transcripts) were found. Almost 5000 annotated protein-coding genes were found to be disrupted in insertional mutant lines, which will accelerate future experimental validation of the annotations. The rice loci were determined by using cDNA sequences obtained from rice and other representative cereals. Our conservative estimate based on these loci and an extrapolation suggested that the gene number of rice is ~32,000, which is smaller than previous estimates. We conducted comparative analyses between rice and Arabidopsis thaliana and found that both genomes possessed several lineage-specific genes, which might account for the observed differences between these species, while they had similar sets of predicted functional domains among the protein sequences. A system to control translational efficiency seems to be conserved across large evolutionary distances. Moreover, the evolutionary process of protein-coding genes was examined. Our results suggest that natural selection may have played a role for duplicated genes in both species, so that duplication was suppressed or favored in a manner that depended on the function of a gene.
Although the electric impedance of biological tissues is highly sensitive to their physiological and pathological status, pure electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has very poor spatial resolution. We invented acousto-electric tomography (AET) to image the electric impedance properties of biological tissues with high spatial resolution. AET is based on acousto-electric modulation, which is the localized variation in conductivity produced by a focused ultrasonic wave. It combines the contrast advantage of EIT and the resolution advantage of ultrasound imaging. The spatial resolution of AET is primarily defined by the size of the ultrasonic focal spot. Therefore, the resolution is much better than that of EIT, and it is scalable with the acoustic parameters. The contrast of AET is determined by the combination of three factors: the electric impedance, the media dependent modulation coefficient, and the acoustic properties. Unlike EIT, AET forms images directly without resorting to inverse algorithms. And unlike traditional ultrasonography, AET is free of speckles.",
