        "abstract": "<p>The 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry recognized three scientists who each contributed to the development of predictive protein folding and artificial intelligence tools to predict the structure of nearly all known proteins. Proteins are composed of long, three-dimensional chains, formed by combining twenty different types of amino acids, that fold into unique structures which determine their function. David Baker has demonstrated new ways to create protein structures that have the capacity for discoveries imperative to biochemistry and medicine. Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper, both from Google DeepMind, developed the open access AlphaFold artificial intelligence tool, which can predict protein folding structures and enable large-scale structural biology.</p>",

        "abstract": "Virtual Reality (VR) technol. has great potential to improve mol. visualization, among other valuable applications. The Caltech Library has made VR available to campus via a workstation that is available to all campus users. The workstation is located in a reservable conference room, and users can check out the key to the locked cart that contains a HTC Vive headset. The workstation supports both com. software via Steam and custom development of applications. Mol. visualization of proteins is used as a custom development example: visualizing a protein in VMD, adding it to an environment in Unity, and then looking at the protein in VR. This talk will discuss the hardware and software choices made for the Library setup, the logistics of running a VR system at a campus library, successful outreach strategies, and how chem. applications are a key component of VR services.",

        "abstract": "The concept of \"Open Science\" is becoming more common and accepted for many reasons, including ethical and\nreproducibility concerns, as well as cost. \"Open\" is making its way into every part of the Research Lifecycle. Before\nresearchers begin, they must consult the literature, which is increasingly under pressure to become more accessible\nthrough various Open Access initiatives, which impact authors and readers alike. They also look to improve their data\nanal. skills through workshops such as those offered by the Carpentries, which offer training using Open programming\nlanguages such as Python and R. New data journals coming online desire to be Open Access to attract submissions and\nincrease their visibility and impact. During their experimentation, researchers are adopting electronic lab notebooks that\nprovide the ability to share data in a more open manner than previously possible. The depositing of data in Open Access\ndata repositories is also becoming more desirable to facilitate reuse (as well as increasingly being mandated by funders\nand journals). Finally, to share their findings, researchers are adopting Open tools such as R Markdown and Zotero are\navailable. Graduate theses at Caltech are made openly available by default unless exceptions are requested. Librarians\nare increasingly assisting campus researchers with bibliometrics and Open Access policy requirements. This talk will\ndiscuss the Caltech Library's \"Open By Default\" strategy and the pos. impact librarians have at every stage of the\nresearch lifecycle.",

        "abstract": "Software Carpentry is a non-profit volunteer organization that was established in 1998 to teach science researchers basic, essential computing skills using a compressed, hands-on workshop approach, and focusing on open-source platforms wherever possible. Usually lasting 2 or 3 days, Software Carpentry workshops focus on teaching the basics of the unix command line, programming (using R or Python), database operation (using SQLite) and version control (using Git or Mercurial). The movement has expanded to include Data Carpentry lessons and workshops focused on cleaning and analyzing research data (including using OpenRefine), Library Carpentry workshops targeted at programming tools librarians could use in their work, and brand-new Author Carpentry lessons targeted at tools that support modern writing and publishing, such at managing bibliog. data using BibTeX and other open-source solns., managing scholarly identification using ORCiD, and other\ntopics. Three Caltech Librarians have completed the Instructor Training to become certified Instructors, and to\ndate we have held two Carpentry workshops for the Caltech community. Discussion will include the philosophy behind the Carpentry instruction approach and a debrief of the workshops held, its relevance to chem. researchers and information professionals, and why this style of instruction has found a home at the Caltech Library.",

        "abstract": "In 2013, the faculty of Caltech adopted an Open Access policy applying to all faculty publications, which reserves rights on behalf of the author and the Institute. Caltech's institutional repository, the Caltech Collection of Open Digital Archives (CODA), has been instrumental in leveraging the Institute's policy as well as facilitating faculty to comply with OA policies imposed by external funding agencies. Several prominent chemistry publishers have instituted Open Access options for authors publishing in their journals. This talk will describe Caltech's OA policy as well as CODA's role in both leveraging the Caltech policy and assisting Caltech faculty with funding and publishing compliance. Data on OA adoption for Caltech authors of chemistry publications, compiled using CODA, will also be presented and discussed.",

Like many of these so-called \"soft skills\", talking about ethics is something that is assumed to be picked up on the fly, and instruction is minimal when present, and more often rolled into nebulous clauses such as \"honor codes\". Models are built on knowledge, so how are knowledge databases constructed.\nIt is worthwhile to understand how information is organized, so as to understand what can be discovered.\nChem. information is unique in terms of representation, and polymers in particular have a somewhat sordid\nhistory in terms of naming and organization.         "abstract": "Caltech's Institutional Repository - the Caltech Collection of Open Digital Archives (Caltech CODA) - recently surpassed\nits 40,000th submission and has over five million downloads since July of 2008. CODA is comprised of several different\nrepositories, including CaltechAUTHORS and CaltechTHESIS. CaltechAUTHORS encompasses the scholarly output of Caltech\nresearchers, with items made freely available when licensing permits. Recently, the Caltech Media Relations department has\nbeen coordinating with the Library when articles of note generate press releases; the Library works to acquire permissions\n(when possible) to make the article available upon issuance of the press release. Doctoral graduates are required to deposit\ntheir thesis in CaltechTHESIS in order to graduate, with items being made freely available when permitted, or embargoed for a\nfinite amt. of time. Requests for embargoed theses are regularly received by the Library and permissions are sought (and often\nobtained) wherever possible. This talk will describe the contents of Caltech CODA, examine usage statistics and trends in\nterms of item type and coordinated publicity, describe case studies of how IRs can facilitate compliance with funder\nrequirements for reporting and data sharing, and offer some observations and insights on how making information freely\navailable may (or may not) translate into \"impact\".",

        "abstract": "Access to chem. information has evolved dramatically over the past 50 years, from printed to electronic to networked. Channeling and focusing this torrent of information to meet the specific needs of researchers has increased exponentially over time, and has required librarians to become beta testers, instructors, and negotiators. Dana Roth's contributions to chem. information, and to the field of librarianship as a whole, cannot be overestimated. This talk will highlight key contributions that Roth has made to the relationships between the Caltech Library and publishers, and between the Library and the campus research community.         "abstract": "Within the last few years, two major energy research initiatives have been undertaken on the Caltech campus: the Resnick Sustainability Institute (RSI) and the Joint Center for Artifical Photosynthesis (JCAP). RSI's research includes the production of electricity and fuels from renewable sources, the distribution and storage of energy, and other sustainability projects. JCAP's area of research is focused on achieving a system of artificial photosynthesis for utilizing solar energy. Both of these projects require resources from a broad range of fields, including chemistry, physics, biology, environmental &amp;systems engineering, and more. This talk will give a brief description of some of the research being done in these projects, along with an overview of where energy research has traditionally been categorized in terms of collection development. A publication analysis will be presented to elucidate where information is being referenced from and where affiliated researchers are publishing, and how this correlates with the current collection holdings. Other considerations, such as identifying resources, outreach to groups about availability, and re-use of the collections, will also be discussed.",

        "abstract": "A polymer is broadly defined as a substance made up of many linked atoms or smaller molecules. Unlike small molecules, polymer properties can vary considerably depending on the method of synthesis, measurement technique, and experimental conditions. As such, knowing additional information about the polymer of interest can be helpful when searching for specific information.         "abstract": "Over the past 7 years, faculty science librarians at the University of Florida have developed and taught a\nthree-credit Honors program course entitled \"Discovering Research and Communicating Science\". The goal of\nthis course is to prep. students (primarily freshmen) to begin undergraduate research, and thus teaches the\nancillary skills often overlooked in advanced electives: searching and evaluating scientific literature, prepg. a\nscientific poster, and writing scientific abstrs. and papers. Guest researchers visit throughout the semester to\nexpose students to undergraduate research opportunities and talk about success in research and other\nprofessional opportunities. This talk will discuss the motivation, organization, and ongoing development of the\ncourse over its different iterations. It will also present feedback from students in prior years, as well as potential\nrelevance to std. chem. information literacy instruction.",

        "abstract": "What do scientists, educators, librarians, and game designers all have in common. In the fall of 2010, this team\nat the University of Florida was awarded a grant from the NSF to support Gaming Against Plagiarism (GAP). The\npurpose is to develop a self-directed, interactive, online game to educate STEM graduate students to recognize\nand avoid plagiarism, including falsification and fabrication of data. GAP's intellectual merit lies in its goal of\ntraining these students in U.S. institutions to function effectively and ethically as authors within multinational\nresearch teams. This talk will discuss the four phases of the game: preliminary content development, design\nand development, usability, and evaluation. The team conducted a survey to elucidate students' perceptions of\nplagiarism and research misconduct. The overall results, including Chem.-specific concerns, will be discussed.\nThis grant project highlights the role that subject librarians can \"play\" in plagiarism and research misconduct\nawareness campus-wide.",

        "abstract": "In these days of competition and rankings, every department is vying for the best graduate students. The\nChem. department at the University of Florida has been taking steps to increase its web presence and advertise\nthe research of its graduate department. This talk will discuss the role of the science librarian as advisor to this\nprocess, including compiling publication lists, negotiating publication restrictions to provide access to published\nresearch, and streamlining the collection and dissemination of department achievements. At UF, a local\nimplementation of the VIVO Network, which enables the discovery of research and scholarship across disciplines,\nis being implemented to achieve these goals. The Marston Science Library has been heavily involved in\npromoting VIVO across its departments, focusing on how it can be used to expand collaborative opportunities\nand advertise professional expertise. Some observations on the effectiveness of this strategy will be discussed.",
