We initiate the systematic study of the following Turán-type question. Suppose Γ is a graph with n vertices such that the edge density between any pair of subsets of vertices of size at least t is at most 1 - c, for some t and c > 0. What is the largest number of edges in a subgraph G ⊆ Γ which does not contain a fixed graph H as an induced subgraph or, more generally, which belongs to a hereditary property P? This provides a common generalization of two recently studied cases, namely Γ being a (pseudo-)random graph and a graph without a large complete bipartite subgraph. We focus on the interesting case where H is a bipartite graph. We determine the answer up to a constant factor with respect to n and t, for certain bipartite H and for Γ either a dense random graph or a Paley graph with a square number of vertices. In particular, our bounds match if H is a tree, or if one part of H has d vertices complete to the other part, all other vertices in that part have degree at most d, and the other part has sufficiently many vertices. As applications of the latter result, we answer a question of Alon, Krivelevich, and Samotij on the largest subgraph with a hereditary property which misses a bipartite graph, and determine up to a constant factor the largest number of edges in a string subgraph of Γ. The proofs are based on a variant of the dependent random choice and a novel approach for finding induced copies by inductively defining probability distributions supported on induced copies of smaller subgraphs.

Expectation thresholds arise from a class of integer linear programs (LPs) that are fundamental to the study of thresholds in large random systems. An avenue towards estimating expectation thresholds comes from the fractional relaxation of these integer LPs, which yield the fractional expectation thresholds. Regarding the gap between the integer LPs and their fractional relaxations, Talagrand made a bold conjecture, that the integral and fractional expectation thresholds are within a constant factor of each other. In other words, any small fractional solution can be "rounded". In this paper, we prove a strong upper bound on the expectation threshold starting from a fractional solution supported on sets with small size. In particular, this resolves Talagrand's conjecture for fractional solutions supported on sets with bounded size. Our key input for rounding the fractional solutions is a sharp version of Talagrand's selector process conjecture that is of independent interest.",

The original algorithms for constructing containers also remove in each step vertices of high degree, which are not in the independent set. Our modified algorithm postpones this until the end, which surprisingly results in a significantly simplified analysis.
",

We show that a subset
$A'\\subseteq A$
of size at most
$s$
can be found so that
$|A+A'| = \\Omega (\\!\\min\\! (\\kappa ^{1/3},s)|A|)$
. Thus, a sumset significantly larger than the Cauchy–Davenport bound can be guaranteed by a bounded size subset assuming that the doubling
$\\kappa$
is large. Building up on the same ideas, we resolve a conjecture of Bollobás, Leader and Tiba that for subsets
$A,B$
of
$\\mathbb{F}_p$
of size at most
$\\alpha p$
for an appropriate constant
$\\alpha \\gt 0$
, one only needs three elements
$b_1,b_2,b_3\\in B$
to guarantee
$|A+\\{b_1,b_2,b_3\\}|\\ge |A|+|B|-1$
. Allowing the use of larger subsets
$A'$
, we show that for sets
$A$
of bounded doubling, one only needs a subset
$A'$
with
$o(|A|)$
elements to guarantee that
$A+A'=A+A$
. We also address another conjecture and a question raised by Bollobás, Leader and Tiba on high-dimensional analogues and sets whose sumset cannot be saturated by a bounded size subset.
We prove that a random Cayley graph on a group of order $N$ has clique number $O(\\log N \\log \\log N)$ with high probability. This bound is best possible up to the constant factor for certain groups, including~$\\mathbb{F}_2^n$, and improves the longstanding upper bound of $O(\\log^2 N)$ due to Alon. Our proof does not make use of the underlying group structure and is purely combinatorial, with the key result being an essentially best possible upper bound for the number of subsets of given order that contain at most a given number of colors in a properly edge-colored complete graph. As a further application of this result, we study a conjecture of Alon stating that every group of order $N$ has a Cayley graph whose clique number and independence number are both $O(\\log N)$, proving the conjecture for all abelian groups of order $N$ for almost all $N$. For finite vector spaces of order $N$ with characteristic congruent to $1 \\pmod 4$, we prove the existence of a self-complementary Cayley graph on the vector space whose clique number and independence number are both at most $(2+o(1))\\log N$. This matches the lower bound for Ramsey numbers coming from random graphs and solves, in a strong form, a problem of Alon and Orlitsky motivated by information theory.
We consider the problem of algorithmically sampling from the Gibbs measure of a mixed $p$-spin spherical spin glass. We give a polynomial-time algorithm that samples from the Gibbs measure up to vanishing total variation error, for any model whose mixture satisfies $$ξ''(s) < \\frac{1}{(1-s)^2}, \\qquad \\forall s\\in [0,1).$$ This includes the pure $p$-spin glasses above a critical temperature that is within an absolute ($p$-independent) constant of the so-called shattering phase transition. Our algorithm follows the algorithmic stochastic localization approach introduced in (Alaoui, Montanari, Sellke, 20022). A key step of this approach is to estimate the mean of a sequence of tilted measures. We produce an improved estimator for this task by identifying a suitable correction to the TAP fixed point selected by approximate message passing (AMP). As a consequence, we improve the algorithm's guarantee over previous work, from normalized Wasserstein to total variation error. In particular, the new algorithm and analysis opens the way to perform inference about one-dimensional projections of the measure.",

Our main tool includes the structure theorem for the set of subset sums due to Conlon, Fox and the first author, together with a result about the structure of a point set in nearly convex position.",

We prove that if $\\mathcal{H}$ is a family of $\\ell$-element sets of VC-dimension at most $d$ and $|\\mathcal{H}| > (C r (\\log d+\\log^\\ast \\ell))^\\ell$ for some absolute constant $C > 0$, then $\\mathcal{H}$ contains an $r$-sunflower. This improves a recent result of Fox, Pach, and Suk. When $d=1$, we obtain a sharp bound, namely that $|\\mathcal{H}| > (r-1)^\\ell$ is sufficient. Along the way, we establish a strengthening of the Kahn-Kalai conjecture for set families of bounded VC-dimension, which is of independent interest.
We initiate the systematic study of the following Turán-type question. Suppose $Γ$ is a graph with $n$ vertices such that the edge density between any pair of subsets of vertices of size at least $t$ is at most $1 - c$, for some $t$ and $c > 0$. What is the largest number of edges in a subgraph $G \\subseteq Γ$ which does not contain a fixed graph $H$ as an induced subgraph or, more generally, which belongs to a hereditary property $\\mathcal{P}$? This provides a common generalization of two recently studied cases, namely $Γ$ being a (pseudo-)random graph and a graph without a large complete bipartite subgraph. We focus on the interesting case where $H$ is a bipartite graph.
We determine the answer up to a constant factor with respect to $n$ and $t$, for certain bipartite $H$ and for $Γ$ either a dense random graph or a Paley graph with a square number of vertices. In particular, our bounds match if $H$ is a tree, or if one part of $H$ has $d$ vertices complete to the other part, all other vertices in that part have degree at most $d$, and the other part has sufficiently many vertices. As applications of the latter result, we answer a question of Alon, Krivelevich, and Samotij on the largest subgraph with a hereditary property which misses a bipartite graph, and determine up to a constant factor the largest number of edges in a string subgraph of $Γ$. The proofs are based on a variant of the dependent random choice and a novel approach for finding induced copies by inductively defining probability distributions supported on induced copies of smaller subgraphs.
Let G be a graph on n vertices of maximum degree $\\Delta$. We show that, for any $\\delta\\gt0$, the down-up walk on independent sets of size $k \\leq(1-\\delta) \\alpha_{c}(\\Delta) n$ mixes in time $O_{\\Delta, \\delta}(k \\log n)$, thereby resolving a conjecture of Davies and Perkins in an optimal form. Here, $\\alpha_{c}(\\Delta) n$ is the NP-hardness threshold for the problem of counting independent sets of a given size in a graph on n vertices of maximum degree $\\Delta$. Our mixing time has optimal dependence on $k, n$ for the entire range of k; previously, even polynomial mixing was not known. In fact, for $k=\\Omega_{\\Delta}(n)$ in this range, we establish a log-Sobolev inequality with optimal constant $\\Omega_{\\Delta, \\delta}(1 / n)$. At the heart of our proof are three new ingredients, which may be of independent interest. The first is a method for lifting $\\ell_{\\infty}$-independence from a suitable distribution on the discrete cube—in this case, the hard-core model—to the slice by proving stability of an Edgeworth expansion using a multivariate zero-free region for the base distribution. The second is a generalization of the Lee-Yau induction to prove log-Sobolev inequalities for distributions on the slice with considerably less symmetry than the uniform distribution. The third is a sharp decomposition-type result which provides a lossless comparison between the Dirichlet form of the original Markov chain and that of the so-called projected chain in the presence of a contractive coupling.
We develop a mathematically rigorous framework for multilayer neural networks in the mean field regime. As the network's widths increase, the network's learning trajectory is shown to be well captured by a meaningful and dynamically nonlinear limit (the
                    mean field
limit), which is characterized by a system of ODEs. Our framework applies to a broad range of network architectures, learning dynamics and network initializations. Central to the framework is the new idea of a
                    neuronal embedding
, which comprises of a non-evolving probability space that allows to embed neural networks of arbitrary widths. Using our framework, we prove several properties of large-width multilayer neural networks. Firstly we show that independent and identically distributed initializations cause strong degeneracy effects on the network's learning trajectory when the network's depth is at least four. Secondly we obtain several global convergence guarantees for feedforward multilayer networks under a number of different setups. These include two-layer and three-layer networks with independent and identically distributed initializations, and multilayer networks of arbitrary depths with a special type of correlated initializations that is motivated by the new concept of
                    bidirectional diversity
. Unlike previous works that rely on convexity, our results admit non-convex losses and hinge on a certain universal approximation property, which is a distinctive feature of infinite-width neural networks and it is shown to hold throughout the training process. Aside from being the first known results for global convergence of multilayer networks in the mean field regime, they demonstrate flexibility of our framework and incorporate several new ideas and insights that depart from the conventional convex optimization wisdom.
We show that for every positive integer $k$ there are positive constants $C$ and $c$ such that if $A$ is a subset of $\\{1, 2, \\dots, n\\}$ of size at least $C n^{1/k}$, then, for some $d \\leq k-1$, the set of subset sums of $A$ contains a homogeneous $d$-dimensional generalized arithmetic progression of size at least $c|A|^{d+1}$. This strengthens a result of Szemerédi and Vu, who proved a similar statement without the homogeneity condition. As an application, we make progress on the Erdős--Straus non-averaging sets problem, showing that every subset $A$ of $\\{1, 2, \\dots, n\\}$ of size at least $n^{\\sqrt{2} - 1 + o(1)}$ contains an element which is the average of two or more other elements of $A$. This gives the first polynomial improvement on a result of Erdős and Sárközy from 1990.",

Our strongest results require various assumptions on the parameters, but we are able to obtain results requiring only $q=p$ a prime with $p\\leq \\exp ({n^{1/13}})$ where $n$ is the degree of the polynomial. Our proofs use Fourier analysis and rely on tools recently applied by Breuillard and Varjú to study the $ax+b$ process, which show equidistribution for $f(\\alpha )$ at a single point. We extend this to handle multiple roots and the Hasse derivatives of $f$, which allow us to study the irreducible factors with multiplicity.
We present a new lower bound on the spectral gap of the Glauber dynamics for the Gibbs distribution of a spectrally independent q-spin system on a graph G = ( V , E ) with maximum degree Δ. Our bound improves upon all previous bounds on the spectral gap obtained in this generality. Notably, for several interesting examples, we are able to handle the entire regime of Δ excluded by coupling arguments. As concrete applications, by combining our new lower bound with known spectral independence computations and known coupling arguments: (1) we show that for a triangle-free graph G = ( V , E ) with maximum degree Δ ≥ 3 , the Glauber dynamics for the uniform distribution on proper k-colorings with k ≥ ( 1.763 … + δ ) Δ colors has spectral gap Ω ˜ δ ( | V | − 1 ) . Previously, such a result was known either if the girth of G is at least 5 (Dyer et al. (2004) [12]), or under restrictions on Δ (Chen et al. (2021) [7]; Hayes and Vigoda (2003) [18]). (2) We show for the binomial random graph G ( n , d / n ) with d = O ( 1 ) , with high probability, an approximately uniformly random matching may be sampled in time O d ( n 2 + o ( 1 ) ) . This improves the corresponding running time of O ˜ d ( n 3 ) due to Jerrum and Sinclair (1989) [22]; Jerrum (2003) [21].
We introduce a notion called entropic independence that is an entropic analog of spectral notions of high-dimensional expansion. Informally, entropic independence of a background distribution µ on k-sized subsets of a ground set of elements says that for any (possibly randomly chosen) set S, the relative entropy of a single element of S drawn uniformly at random carries at most O(1/k) fraction of the relative entropy of S. Entropic independence is the analog of the notion of spectral independence, if one replaces variance by entropy. We use entropic independence to derive tight mixing time bounds, overcoming the lossy nature of spectral analysis of Markov chains on exponential-sized state spaces. In our main technical result, we show a general way of deriving entropy contraction, a.k.a. modified log-Sobolev inequalities, for down-up random walks from spectral notions. We show that spectral independence of a distribution under arbitrary external fields automatically implies entropic independence. We furthermore extend our theory to the case where spectral independence does not hold under arbitrary external fields. To do this, we introduce a framework for obtaining tight mixing time bounds for Markov chains based on what we call restricted modified log-Sobolev inequalities, which guarantee entropy contraction not for all distributions, but for those in a sufficiently large neighborhood of the stationary distribution. To derive our results, we relate entropic independence to properties of polynomials: µ is entropically independent exactly when a transformed version of the generating polynomial of µ is upper bounded by its linear tangent; this property is implied by concavity of the said transformation, which was shown by prior work to be locally equivalent to spectral independence. We apply our results to obtain (1) tight modified log-Sobolev inequalities and mixing times for multi-step down-up walks on fractionally log-concave distributions, (2) the tight mixing time of O(nlogn) for Glauber dynamics on Ising models whose interaction matrix has eigenspectrum lying within an interval of length smaller than 1, improving upon the prior quadratic dependence on n, and (3) nearly-linear time Oδ(n) samplers for the hardcore and Ising models on n-node graphs that have δ-relative gap to the tree-uniqueness threshold. In the last application, our bound on the running time does not depend on the maximum degree Δ of the graph, and is therefore optimal even for high-degree graphs, and in fact, is sublinear in the size of the graph for high-degree graphs.
Let $\\Phi=(V, \\mathcal{C})$ be a constraint satisfaction problem on variables $v_{1}, \\ldots, v_{n}$ such that each constraint depends on at most $k$ variables and such that each variable assumes values in an alphabet of size at most [$q$]. Suppose that each constraint shares variables with at most $\\Delta$ constraints and that each constraint is violated with probability at most $p$ (under the product measure on its variables). We show that for $k, q=O(1)$, there is a deterministic, polynomial time algorithm to approximately count the number of satisfying assignments and a randomized, polynomial time algorithm to sample from approximately the uniform distribution on satisfying assignments, provided that $C\\cdot q^{2}\\cdot k\\cdot p\\cdot\\Delta^{7} < 1$, where $C$ is an absolute constant. Previously, a result of this form was known essentially only in the special case when each constraint is violated by exactly one assignment to its variables. For the special case of $k$ .CNF formulas, the term $\\Delta^{7}$ improves the previously best known $\\Delta^{60}$ for deterministic algorithms [Moitra, J.ACM, 2019] and $\\Delta^{13}$ for randomized algorithms [Feng, Guo, Yin, and Zhang, STOC 2021]. For the special case of properly $q$-coloring $k$-uniform hypergraphs, the term $\\Delta^{7}$ improves the previously best known $\\Delta^{14}$ for deterministic algorithms [Guo, Liao, Lu, and Zhang, SICOMP, 2019] and $\\Delta^{9}$ for randomized algorithms [Feng, Guo, Yin, and Zhang, STOC 2021].
We introduce a notion called entropic independence that is an entropic analog of spectral notions of high-dimensional expansion. Informally, entropic independence of a background distribution $μ$ on $k$-sized subsets of a ground set of elements says that for any (possibly randomly chosen) set $S$, the relative entropy of a single element of $S$ drawn uniformly at random carries at most $O(1/k)$ fraction of the relative entropy of $S$. To derive our results, we relate entropic independence to properties of polynomials: $μ$ is entropically independent exactly when a transformed version of the generating polynomial of $μ$ is upper bounded by its linear tangent; this property is implied by concavity of the said transformation, which was shown by prior work to be locally equivalent to spectral independence. We apply our results to obtain tight modified log-Sobolev inequalities and mixing times for multi-step down-up walks on fractionally log-concave distributions. As our flagship application, we establish the tight mixing time of $O(n\\log n)$ for Glauber dynamics on Ising models whose interaction matrix has eigenspectrum lying within an interval of length smaller than $1$, improving upon the prior quadratic dependence on $n$.
We introduce a framework for obtaining tight mixing times for Markov chains based on what we call restricted modified log-Sobolev inequalities. Modified log-Sobolev inequalities (MLSI) quantify the rate of relative entropy contraction for the Markov operator, and are notoriously difficult to establish. However, infinitesimally close to stationarity, entropy contraction becomes equivalent to variance contraction, a.k.a. a Poincare inequality, which is significantly easier to establish through, e.g., spectral analysis. Motivated by this observation, we study restricted modified log-Sobolev inequalities that guarantee entropy contraction not for all starting distributions, but for those in a large neighborhood of the stationary distribution. We show how to sample from the hardcore and Ising models on $n$-node graphs that have a constant $δ$ relative gap to the tree-uniqueness threshold, in nearly-linear time $\\widetilde O_δ(n)$. Notably, our bound does not depend on the maximum degree $Δ$, and is therefore optimal even for high-degree graphs. This improves on prior mixing time bounds of $\\widetilde O_{δ, Δ}(n)$ and $\\widetilde O_δ(n^2)$, established via (non-restricted) modified log-Sobolev and Poincare inequalities respectively. We further show that optimal concentration inequalities can still be achieved from the restricted form of modified log-Sobolev inequalities. To establish restricted entropy contraction, we extend the entropic independence framework of Anari, Jain, Koehler, Pham, and Vuong to the setting of distributions that are spectrally independent under a restricted set of external fields. We also develop an orthogonal trick that might be of independent interest: utilizing Bernoulli factories we show how to implement Glauber dynamics updates on high-degree graphs in $O(1)$ time, assuming standard adjacency array representation of the graph.",
