This thesis is divided into two parts.
\r\n\r\nIn Part I, we give an explicit construction for a class\r\nof lattices with effectively non-integral dimensionality. A\r\nreasonable definition of dimensionality applicable to lattice systems is\r\nproposed. The construction is illustrated by several \r\nexamples. We calculate the effective dimensionality of some\r\nof these lattices. The attainable values of the dimensionality d,\r\nusing our construction, are densely distributed in the\r\ninterval 1<d<\u221e.
\r\n\r\nThe variation of critical exponents with dimensionality\r\nis studied for a variety of Hamiltonians. It is shown that\r\nthe critical exponents for the spherical model, for all d,\r\nagree with the values derived in literature using formal\r\narguments only. We also study the critical behavior of the\r\nclassical p-vector Heisenberg model and the Fortuin-Kasteleyn\r\ncluster model for lattices with d<2. It\r\nis shown that no phase transition occurs at nonzero\r\ntemperatures. The renormalization procedure is used to\r\ndetermine the exact values of the connectivity constants and\r\nthe critical exponents \u03b1, \u03b3, v for the self-avoiding\r\nwalk problem on some multiply connected lattices with d<2.\r\nIt is shown by explicit construction that the critical\r\nexponents are not functions of dimensionality alone, but\r\ndepend on detailed connectivity properties of the lattice.
\r\n\r\nIn Part II, we investigate a model of the melting \r\ntransition in solids. Melting is treated as a layer \r\nphenomenon, the onset of melting being characterized by the \r\nability of layers to slip past each other. We study the \r\nvariation of the root-mean-square deviation of atoms in one \r\nlayer as the temperature is increased. The adjacent layers \r\nare assumed held fixed and provide an external periodic \r\npotential. The coupling between atoms within the layer is \r\nassumed to be simple harmonic. The model is thus equivalent\r\nto a lattice version of the Sine-Gordon field theory in two \r\ndimensions. Using an exact equivalence,\tthe partition\r\nfunction for this problem is shown to be related to the \r\ngrand partition function of a two-species classical lattice \r\nCoulomb gas. We use the renormalization procedure to \r\ndetermine the critical behavior of the lattice Coulomb gas \r\nproblem. Translating the results back to the original \r\nproblem, it is shown that there exists a phase transition in \r\nthe model at a finite temperature Tc. Below Tc, the root\r\nmean square deviation of atoms in the layer is finite, and\r\nvaries as (Tc-T)-1/4 near the phase transition. Above Tc, the\r\nroot mean square deviation is infinite.\tThe specific heat \r\nshows an essential singularity at the phase transition,\r\nvarying as exp(-|Tc -T|-1/2) near Tc.

The low momentum transfer matrix elements of some of the S-wave hadrons are derived and compared with experiment in both models, and we conclude that the constraints imposed on the latter model by the MIT model are largely justified by experiment. We then generalize the MIT model to include lowest order gluon exchange spin-spin forces between quarks and remove some degeneracies of the zeroth order MIT model. "Physics; Engineering Science", "abstract": "This thesis is a study of the electrodynamic phenomena which can occur in strong magnetic fields (on the order of 4.41x1013 gauss). These phenomena are studied by means of a perturbation formalism, developed here to be exact to all orders in the field strength, and which is closely analogous to the diagrammatic formalism of empty-space electrodynamics. Using this method, the rate for pair production by single photons is calculated, as well as an approximation to it. The index of refraction of the strong field region is also calculated, as is the low-frequency photon splitting amplitude. In addition, this thesis studies some phenomena occurring at very high field strengths, in particular the energy of the ground state to first order in the fine-structure constant, and the counter-intuitive non annihilating states. Numerical calculations are made where relevant.

Dual Quark Model with Spin", "ispublished": "unpub", "full_text_status": "public", "keywords": "Physics", "abstract": "A dual quark model is developed from the usual Veneziano model \r\nby explicitly including the Dirac spin of the quarks. Resonances \r\nappear without the parity doubling and new ghosts present in previous \r\nmodels with spin. This is accomplished by eliminating the contributions \r\nof the negative parity components (MacDowell-twins) of the \r\nspin quarks 1/2 through the introduction of fixed J-plane cuts. The\r\nresonances belong to an SU6 symmetric spectrum identical, on the\r\nleading trajectory, with that of the usual static symmetrical quark\r\nmodel. All resonances couple via SU6w x O2Lz symmetric vertices\r\nand the model factorizes with essentially the same degeneracy as the\r\nusual Veneziano model. As a consequence of requiring these two \r\nfeatures the model acquires further new structure which is studied\r\nin detail in terms of the asymptotic behavior of the model. This \r\nnew structure leads to unavoidable \"background\" contributions to \r\nthe imaginary parts of the amplitudes not present in previous dual \r\nmodels.\tThis situation is examined and interpreted in the language \r\nof Finite Energy Sum Rules.
\r\n\r\nIn order to test the basic features of the model explicit \r\ncalculations are made for the case of pion-nucleon scattering in \r\nthe Regge limit. To make the numerical work easier a somewhat \r\nsimplified version of the model is used. Although the results of\r\nthe calculations are suggestive of reasonable J-plane structure for \r\nthe various amplitudes, i.e., the location of Regge pole-fixed cut \r\ninterference is reasonable from the standpoint of the data, the \r\noverall kinematic behavior of the amplitudes is definitely not \r\ncompatible with what is measured. However, it is noted that this \r\nkinematic behavior depends strongly on those details of the model \r\nwhich were simplified in the present study. If such models are to\r\nbe unambiguously and successfully tested against data, future studies \r\nmust treat these details more completely and realistically, including \r\nboth unitarity and symmetry breaking effects.

With no further assumptions, the equations are integrated, yielding an exhaustive list of Type D vacuum metrics. The solutions all possess two commuting Killing vectors and depend on from one to four arbitrary constants. The Type D fields with expanding rays are six closely related versions of Kerr-NUT space, the EhlersKundt \"C\" metric, and a new generalization of the \"C\" metric possessing rotation. For zero expansion we find the three EhlersKundt \"B\" metrics, plus rotating generalizations of each.\r\n\r\nThe six Kerr-NUT metrics are interpreted as spinning particles with timelike, lightlike, or spacelike momentum and angular momentum vectors occurring in all possible combinations. The \"C\" metric is tentatively identified as a gravitational analog of the runaway solutions encountered in electrodynamics, i. e. , a point mass executing hyperbolic motion.\r\n\r\nNext we consider Type D fields with electromagnetism present. We find that all of the above vacuum metrics can be readily \"charged\" by adding a non-null electromagnetic field whose principal null vectors coincide with the gravitational ones. From these laws, the loss of energy, momentum and angular momentum of a system due to the radiation of gravitational waves is found. Two techniques, radiation reaction and flux across a large sphere, are used in this calculation and are shown to be in agreement over a time average. These results are then applied to the system of two point masses moving in elliptical orbits around each other. The secular decays of the semi-major axis and eccentricity are found as functions of time and are integrated to specify the decay by gravitational radiation of such systems as functions of their initial conditions. For completeness, the secular change in the perihelion of the orbit for two arbitrary masses is found by a method which is in the spirit of the above calculations. The case of gravitational radiation when the bodies are relativistic is then considered, and an equation for the radiation similar to that of electromagnetic radiation is found. A method is presented for approximating the time-dependent Hamiltonian with a time-independent one in the weak oscillating field case. With the aid of Floquet's theorem the problem is exactly converted to one with a time-independent Hamiltonian represented by an infinite matrix. The approximation of only two states then permits finding the resonance line shape by perturbation theory for both single and multiple quantum transitions with equal ease. The simple case of only two states connected by an off diagonal sinusoidal perturbation is studied in detail, and a complete description of the average transition probability is found for the strong oscillating field case. A few more complex cases are discussed. A deeper understanding of the analysis is obtained by examining the theory with the oscillating field quantized. The calculation improves\r\non previous calculations of direct pair production in four\r\nrespects: (1) all of the first-order Feynman diagrams for the\r\nprocess are included, (2) the exchange effect is included, (3) the\r\neffect of screening is treated more accurately using the Thomas-Fermi\r\nscreening function, (4) the integration of the differential\r\ncross section is done with increased accuracy. These improvements\r\nin the calculation result in a theoretical accuracy of 10-15%\r\nfor low Z elements, and of the order of 25% for high Z elements,\r\nfor which the neglected Coulomb corrections are more important.
\r\n\r\nThe present results are compared with previous theories\r\nand with experiments. It is found that there is reasonable agreement\r\nwith experiment for energies up to about 1 Bev, but that for\r\nhigher energies the experimental situation is too uncertain to\r\nallow a definite conclusion.

With magnetic dipole-dipole and exchange interactions taken into account, and with the assumption that the Zeeman energy is dominant, the zeroth and the second moments of the following four lines were evaluated without approximations for powders: (1) first Larmor line, parallel field, ( 2) second Larmor line, parallel field, (3) second Larmor line, perpendicular field, (4) low frequency line, perpendicular field. The contribution of exchange to the second moment was found to be the same for the four cases treated, while the total intensity has the ratio 1: 1: 1: 3/2. A mechanism for alignment of the dust grains, due to Davis and Greenstein, is analyzed. A dissipative torque, due to paramagnetic relaxation in the grains, tends to line up a spinning dust grain in the interstellar magnetic field. This aligning torque is opposed by the randomizing effect of collisions with interstellar hydrogen. The aim of this paper is to find the distribution of orientations which results. The analysis is carried out through use of the Fokker-Planck equation. The solution is carried to completion for the case of small magnetic fields and nearly spherical dust grains, and the resulting polarization parameter is found. The spectrum of relaxation times due to the collisions is also found.

The decay rate is found to be a monotonically decreasing function of the atomic number, in contrast with recent experimental results.
\r\n\r\nThe muon is represented by a relativistic wave function for a point nucleus with parameters adjusted for finite-nuclear-size effects. The outcoming electron is represented by a Sommerfeld-Maue wave function. The errors involved in these approximations are discussed. An estimate of the error in the electron wave function is obtained by comparing with an exact calculation for the lowest electron angular momentum state.
