The Zwicky Transient Transient Facility (ZTF) performs a systematic neutrino follow-up program, searching for optical counterparts to high-energy neutrinos with dedicated Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) observations. Since first light in March 2018, ZTF has taken prompt observations for 24 high-quality neutrino alerts from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, with a median latency of 12.2 hours from initial neutrino detection. From two of these campaigns, we have already reported tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2019dsg and likely TDE AT2019fdr as probable counterparts, suggesting that TDEs contribute >7.8% of the astrophysical neutrino flux. We here present the full results of our program through to December 2021. No additional candidate neutrino sources were identified by our program, allowing us to place the first constraints on the underlying optical luminosity function of astrophysical neutrino sources. Transients with optical absolutes magnitudes brighter that -21 can contribute no more than 87% of the total, while transients brighter than -22 can contribute no more than 58% of the total, neglecting the effect of extinction. These are the the first observational constraints on the neutrino emission of bright populations such as superluminous supernovae. None of the neutrinos were coincident with bright optical AGN flares comparable to that observed for TXS 0506+056/IC170922A, suggesting that most astrophysical neutrinos are not produced during such optical flares. We highlight the outlook for electromagnetic neutrino follow-up programs, including the expected potential for the Rubin Observatory.
ISCEA (Infrared Satellite for Cosmic Evolution Astrophysics) is a small astrophysics mission whose Science Goal is to discover how galaxies evolved in the cosmic web of dark matter at cosmic noon. Its Science Objective is to determine the history of star formation and its quenching in galaxies as a function of local density and stellar mass when the Universe was 3-5 Gyrs old (1.2 < z < 2.1). ISCEA is designed to test the Science Hypothesis that during the period of cosmic noon, at 1.7 < z < 2.1, environmental quenching is the dominant quenching mechanism for typical galaxies not only in clusters and groups, but also in the extended cosmic web surrounding these structures. ISCEA meets its Science Objective by making a 10% shot noise measurement of star formation rate down to 6 M_⊙  yr⁻¹ using H-α out to a radius > 10 Mpc in each of 50 protocluster (cluster and cosmic web) fields at 1.2 < z < 2.1. ISCEA measures the star formation quenching factor in those fields, and galaxy kinematics with a precision < 50 km s⁻¹ to deduce the 3D spatial distribution in each field. ISCEA will transform our understanding of galaxy evolution at cosmic noon.

ISCEA is a small satellite observatory with a 30 cm equivalent diameter aperture telescope with a FoV of 0.32 deg², and a multi-object spectrograph with a digital micro-mirror device (DMD) as its programmable slit mask. ISCEA will obtain spectra of 1000 galaxies simultaneously at an effective resolving power of R = 1000, with 2.8" x 2.8" slits, over the NIR wavelength range of 1.1 to 2.0 µm, a regime not accessible from the ground without large gaps in coverage. ISCEA will achieve a pointing accuracy of ≤ 2" FWHM over 200s. ISCEA will be launched into a Low Earth Orbit, with a prime mission of 2.5 years. ISCEA's space-qualification of DMDs opens a new window for spectroscopy from space, enabling revolutionary advances in astrophysics.
Near-Earth asteroid population models predict the existence of asteroids located inside the orbit of Venus. However, despite searches up to the end of 2019, none have been found. Here we report the discovery by the Zwicky Transient Facility of the first known asteroid located inside of Venus' orbit, 2020 AV₂, possessing an aphelion distance of 0.65 au and ∼2 km in size. While it is possible that 2020 AV₂ is the largest of its kind, we find that its discovery is surprising in the context of population models where the expected count is close to zero. If this discovery is not a statistical fluke, then 2020 AV₂ may come from a yet undiscovered source population of asteroids interior to Venus, and currently favored asteroid population models may need to be adjusted.
The Euclid, Rubin/LSST and Roman (WFIRST) projects will undertake flagship optical/near-infrared surveys in the next decade. By mapping thousands of square degrees of sky and covering the electromagnetic spectrum between 0.3 and
2 microns with sub-arcsec resolution, these projects will detect several tens
of billions of sources, enable a wide range of astrophysical investigations by
the astronomical community and provide unprecedented constraints on the nature
of dark energy and dark matter. The ultimate cosmological, astrophysical and
time-domain science yield from these missions will require joint survey
processing (JSP) functionality at the pixel level that is outside the scope of
the individual survey projects. The JSP effort scoped here serves two
high-level objectives: 1) provide precise concordance multi-wavelength images
and catalogs over the entire sky area where these surveys overlap, which
accounts for source confusion and mismatched isophotes, and 2) provide a
science platform to analyze concordance images and catalogs to enable a wide
range of astrophysical science goals to be formulated and addressed by the
research community. For the cost of about 200WY, JSP will allow the U.S. (and
international) astronomical community to manipulate the flagship data sets and
undertake innovative science investigations ranging from solar system object
characterization, exoplanet detections, nearby galaxy rotation rates and dark
matter properties, to epoch of reionization studies. It will also allow for the
ultimate constraints on cosmological parameters and the nature of dark energy,
with far smaller uncertainties and a better handle on systematics than by any one survey alone.
The Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) Coronagraph Instrument (CGI) will be the first high-performance stellar coronagraph using active wavefront control for deep starlight suppression in space, providing unprecedented levels of contrast, spatial resolution, and sensitivity for astronomical observations in the optical. One science case enabled by the CGI will be taking images and(R~50)spectra of faint interplanetary dust structures present in the habitable zone of nearby sunlike stars (~10 pc) and within the snow-line of more distant ones(~20pc), down to dust density levels commensurate with that of the solar system zodiacal cloud. Reaching contrast levels below~10-7 for the first time, CGI will cross an important threshold in debris disks physics, accessing disks with low enough optical depths that their structure is dominated by transport phenomena than collisions. Hence, CGI results will be crucial for determining how exozodiacal dust grains are produced and transported in low-density disks around mature stars. Additionally, CGI will be able to measure the brightness level and constrain the degree of asymmetry of exozodiacal clouds around individual nearby sunlike stars in the optical, at the ~10x solar zodiacal emission level. This information will be extremely valuable for optimizing the observational strategy of possible future exo-Earth direct imaging missions, especially those planning to operate at optical wavelengths, such as Habitable Exoplanet Observatory (HabEx) and the Large Ultraviolet/Optical/Infrared Surveyor (LUVOIR).",

With the current baseline design, the WFIRST filter complement will extend from the bluest wavelength allowed by the optical design to a reddest filter (F184W) that has a red cutoff at 2.0 microns. In this white paper, we outline some of the science advantages for adding a K_s filter with a 2.15 micron central wavelength in order to extend the wavelength coverage for WFIRST as far to the red as the possible given the thermal performance of the observatory and the sensitivity of the detectors.
Cosmic acceleration is the most surprising cosmological discovery in many decades. Testing and distinguishing among possible explanations requires cosmological measurements of extremely high precision probing the full history of cosmic expansion and structure growth and, ideally, compare and contrast matter and relativistic tracers of the gravity potential. This program is one of the defining objectives of the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), as set forth in the New Worlds, New Horizons report (NWNH) in 2010. The WFIRST mission has the ability to improve these measurements by 1-2 orders of magnitude compared to the current state of the art, while simultaneously extending their redshift grasp, greatly improving control of systematic effects, and taking a unified approach to multiple probes that provide complementary physical information and cross-checks of cosmological results. We describe in this annual report the activities of the Science Investigation Team (SIT) "Cosmology with the High Latitude Survey (HLS)" during the year 2017. This team was selected by NASA in December 2015 in order to address the stringent challenges of the WFIRST dark energy (DE) program through the Project's formulation phase. This SIT has elected to jointly address Galaxy Redshift Survey, Weak Lensing and Cluster Growth and thus fully embrace the fact that the imaging and spectroscopic elements of the HLS will be realized as an integrated observing program, and they jointly impose requirements on performance and operations. WFIRST is designed to be able to deliver a definitive result on the origin of cosmic acceleration. It is not optimized for Figure of Merit sensitivity but for control of systematic uncertainties and for having multiple techniques each with multiple cross-checks. Our SIT work focuses on understanding the potential systematics in the WFIRST DE measurements.
The focus of this report is on the opportunities enabled by the combination of LSST, Euclid and WFIRST, the optical surveys that will be an essential part of the next decade's astronomy. The sum of these surveys has the potential to be significantly greater than the contributions of the individual parts. As is detailed in this report, the combination of these surveys should give us multi-wavelength high-resolution images of galaxies and broadband data covering much of the stellar energy spectrum. These stellar and galactic data have the potential of yielding new insights into topics ranging from the formation history of the Milky Way to the mass of the neutrino. However, enabling the astronomy community to fully exploit this multi-instrument data set is a challenging technical task: for much of the science, we will need to combine the photometry across multiple wavelengths with varying spectral and spatial resolution. We identify some of the key science enabled by the combined surveys and the key technical challenges in achieving the synergies.
In December 2010, NASA created a Science Definition Team (SDT) for WFIRST, the Wide Field Infra-Red Survey Telescope, recommended by the Astro 2010 Decadal Survey as the highest priority for a large space mission. The SDT was chartered to work with the WFIRST Project Office at GSFC and the Program Office at JPL to produce a Design Reference Mission (DRM) for WFIRST. Part of the original charge was to produce an interim design reference mission by mid-2011. That document was delivered to NASA and widely circulated within the astronomical community. In late 2011 the Astrophysics Division augmented its original charge, asking for two design reference missions. The first of these, DRM1, was to be a finalized version of the interim DRM, reducing overall mission costs where possible. The second of these, DRM2, was to identify and eliminate capabilities that overlapped with those of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (henceforth JWST), ESA's Euclid mission, and the NSF's ground-based Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (henceforth LSST), and again to reduce overall mission cost, while staying faithful to NWNH. This report presents both DRM1 and DRM2.
When and how did galaxies form and their metals accumulate? Over the last decade, this has moved from an archeological question to a live investigation: there is now a broad picture of the evolution of galaxies in dark matter halos: their masses, stars, metals and supermassive blackholes. Galaxies have been found and studied in which these formation processes are taking place most vigorously, all the way back in cosmic time to when the intergalactic medium (IGM) was still largely neutral. However, the details of how and why the interstellar medium (ISM) in
distant galaxies cools, is processed, recycled and enriched in metals by stars, and fuels active
galactic nuclei (AGNs) remain uncertain. In particular, the cooling of gas to fuel star formation,
and the chemistry and physics of the most intensely active regions is hidden from view at optical
wavelengths, but can be seen and diagnosed at mid- & far-infrared (IR) wavelengths. Rest-frame
IR observations are important first to identify the most luminous, interesting and important
galaxies, secondly to quantify accurately their total luminosity, and finally to use spectroscopy to
trace the conditions in the molecular and atomic gas out of which stars form. In order to map out
these processes over the full range of environments and large-scale structures found in the
universe - from the densest clusters of galaxies to the emptiest voids – we require tools for deep,
large area surveys, of millions of galaxies out to z~5, and for detailed follow-up spectroscopy.
The necessary tools can be realized technically. Here, we outline the requirements for gathering
the crucial information to build, validate and challenge models of galaxy evolution.",
