The heavy ion counter (HIC) on the Galileo spacecraft consists of two low-energy telescopes that were proof-test models of the telescopes used for the cosmic ray subsystem (CRS) on Voyager. The telescopes on HIC were improved to better withstand the intense radiation environment of the Jovian system and to measure higher-energy particles with greater sensitivity. The similarity of these two instruments makes it natural to compare the data in an effort to glean insight on the behavior of heavy ion fluxes at higher energies and how the inner Jovian magnetosphere has changed in the last 18 years. Inside L = 6, the oxygen spectrum suggests a spectral break at ∼ 7500 MeV/Gauss, corresponding to ions with gyroradii of ∼ 1.5 R_(Io) at L = 6. A comparison of the phase space densities show remarkable agreement between the two time periods outside of the Io orbit, with differential spectra consistent with γ ∼ −8 above ∼ 6 MeV/nucleon. Near Io Galileo observed a large density gradient not apparent in the Voyager data that may be due to local time asymmetries or a decrease in the radial diffusion rate.",

The Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) mission is supported by the ACE Science Center for the purposes of processing and distributing ACE data, and facilitating collaborative work on the data by instrument investigators and by the space physics community at large. The Science
Center will strive to ensure that the data are properly archived and easily available. In particular, it is intended that use of a centralized science facility will guarantee appropriate use of data formatting standards, thus easing access to the data, will improve communications within and to the ACE science working team, and will reduce redundant effort in data processing. Secondary functions performed by the Science Center include acting as an interface between the scientists and the mission operations
team.
Our previous studies showed that the fragmentation cross sections of gold nuclei interacting in
hydrogen have large variations between the values measured at 0.9 and 10.6 GeV/n, which has very
significant implications on calculations of the propagation of the heaviest UH cosmic ray nuclei,
such as Pb and Pt We have now completed a series of runs at the Brookhaven AGS using beams of
gold nuclei of intermediate energy. The data from these runs will allow us to establish the excitation
functions for these cross sections in a wide range of targets and hence model propagation more
accurately than hitherto. In addition we will be able to study the energy dependence of nuclear
charge pickup, electromagnetic dissociation and fission. Beams of gold nuclei with seven energies
between 4.0 and 0.9 Ge V /n were studied interacting in targets ranging in mass from hydrogen to lead. We will present data on the cross sections derived from several of these beams and discuss
some of the implications.",

They will also refine tests of whether freshly synthesized rprocess material is a significant component in cosmic rays. The detector concept described utilizes an array of silicon detectors for dF/dx measurements, two Cherenkov counters with radiators of
different refractive index for velocity determination (one using aerogel and one using a novel waveshifter readout approach), and scintillating fibers for a hodoscope/time-of-flight detector. The numbers of particles which can be collected with this approach and the expected charge resolution are discussed.
NASA, at the direction of its Administrator, is undertaking a grand challenge of change for "faster, better, cheaper; strong emphasis is now being placed on staying within cost
projections while still meeting schedule and performance goals. This led NASA to mandate fixed-price, capped-cost programs. The Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) is the first mission to be funded in this manner. Consequently, the ACE Project has sought novel approaches and techniques to constrain costs without compromising schedule or science goals. A key approach that has been adopted is novel, multiple reusage of the ACE control center subsystem.

ACE will use a version of the Transportable Payload Operations Control Center (TPOCC) for its mission operations. It was determined in Phase 8 of the ACE Project that a potential existed for substantial savings if the adaptation of the TPOCC for ACE Mission Operations could include adapting it as well for use as the primary component in the Ground Support Equipment for
Integration and Testing of the ACE Spacecraft and, at the same time, also adapting it be the basic component in the ACE Science Center; thus, realizing three separate uses for essentially the same system. Implementing this approach required enhancing the TPOCC requirements, significant
changes in its development schedule, and changes in the allocation and activities of personnel responsible for development of ACE operations. This paper discusses how these issues were addressed, the unforeseen problems that have been encountered, how these problems have been
resolved, and an evaluation of what this approach portends for application to future missions.",

The instruments would have sufficient collecting power to improve the number of particles collected over that of previous measurements by more than an order of magnitude and, more important, will have the capability to clearly distinguish individual elements. These measurements are of fundamental importance to an understanding of the origin, nucleosynthesis, and acceleration of energetic galactic and solar particles.
With the addition of krypton and silver projectiles we have extended our previous studies of the fragmentation of heavy relativistic nuclei in targets ranging in mass from hydrogen to lead. These projectiles were studied at a number of discrete energies between 450 and 1500A MeV. The total and partial charge-changing cross sections were determined for each energy, target, and projectile, and the values compared with previous predictions. A new parametrization of the dependence of the total charge-changing cross sections on the target and projectile is introduced, based on nuclear charge radii derived from electron scattering. We have also parametrized the energy dependence of the total cross sections over the range of energies studied. New parameters were found for a previous representation of the partial charge-changing cross sections in hydrogen and a new parametrization has been introduced for the nonhydrogen targets. The evidence that limiting fragmentation has been attained for these relatively light projectile nuclei at Bevalac energies is shown to be inconclusive, and further measurements at higher energies will be needed to address this question.
The three large solar particle events, beginning on October 19, 1989 and lasting approximately six days, were characterized by high fluences of solar protons and heavy ions at 1 AU. During these events, an abnormally large number of upsets (243) were observed in the random access memory of the attitude control system (ACS) control processing electronics (CPE) on-board the geosynchronous TDRS-1 (Telemetry and Data Relay Satellite). The RAM unit affected was composed of eight Fairchild 93L422 memory chips. The Galileo spacecraft, launched on October 18, 1989 (one day prior to the solar particle events) observed the fluxes of heavy ions experienced by TDRS-1. Two solid-state detector telescopes on-board Galileo designed to measure heavy ion species and energy, were turned on during time periods within each of the three separate events. The heavy ion data have been modeled and the time history of the events reconstructed to estimate heavy ion fluences. These fluences were converted to effective LET spectra after transport through the estimated shielding distribution around the TDRS-1 ACS system. The number of single event upsets (SEU) expected was calculated by integrating the measured cross section for the Fairchild 93L422 memory chip with average effective LET spectrum. The expected number of heavy ion induced SEUs calculated was 176. GOES-7 proton data, observed during the solar particle events, were used to estimate the number of proton-induced SEUs by integrating the proton fluence spectrum incident on the memory chips, with the two-parameter Bendel cross section for proton SEU's. The proton fluence spectrum at the device level
was gotten by transporting the protons through the estimated
shielding distribution. The number of calculated proton-induced
SEU's was 72, yielding a total of 248 predicted SEU's, very
close to the 243 observed SEU's. These calculations uniquely
demonstrate the roles that solar heavy ions and protons played in
the production of SEU's during the October 1989 solar particle
events.",

The measured cross sections for the heavier targets are somewhat larger than those predicted by a model based on data taken at lower energies with lighter targets. Partial charge-changing cross sections for the production of fragments from the incident Au projectiles were measured for charge changes (ΔZ) from ΔZ=+1_(,80)Hg, down to approximately ΔZ=-29_(,50)Sn. In comparison to lower energy measurements, these partial cross sections are found to be smaller for small ΔZ and larger or the same for large ΔZ. The H partial cross sections are found to follow a power law in ΔZ similar to that for heavier targets, instead of the exponential form observed at lower energies. Factorization is found to hold for all partial cross sections with ΔZ greater than two. In the heavier targets, the cross sections for one and two proton removal have significant contributions from electromagnetic dissociation. The electromagnetic dissociation contribution to the total cross section is derived and found to be relatively small, but with a strong dependence on the charge of the target nuclei of the form Z_T^(1.75±0.01).",

We have improved parametric fits to those cross sections
as functions of energy and of projectile, target, and fragment charge. At
high energies, we have determined cross sections for Au projectiles at 10.6
GeV /nucleon in targets of H, CH_2, C, Al, Cu, Sn, and Pb. Compared
with cross sections at 1 GeV /n, fragment production is substantially
changed, especially for the H target. These changes have important implications
for calculations of interstellar propagation of ultraheavy nuclei.
At lower energies, we have added Kr and Ag to our list of projectiles.
Analysis of these data has led to a better understanding of the systematics
of these cross sections, hence more physically meaningful parameterizations
for fragmentation at high energies and for charge pickup.
Any study of the origin of the UH nuclei in the cosmic rays requires that their observed abundances be propagated back to the source. This demands a knowledge of the interaction cross sections in the materials of the detectors, any local overlying matter, and the interstellar medium. New measurements of interaction probabilities of 10.6 GeV/n gold nuclei show significant differences from previous measurements made at less than 1.0 GeV/n nuclei. These differences are particularly marked for a hydrogen target. Hence, those cross sections previously measured at low energies not be applied to cosmic ray observations made at energies ≥ 2 GeV/n. Without a measurement of the energy dependence of these cross sections it will be difficult to make reliable propagation calculations, since the differences between measured and predicted cross sections are still at the 20 to 30% level.",

The SEP composition in a typical large solar particle event reflects the composition of the Sun, with adjustments due to fractionation effects which depend on the first ionization potential (FIP) of the ion and on the ratio of ionic charge to mass (Q/M).
In the interactions of relativistic heavy projectile nuclei with target nuclei there is a measurable probability for the projectile nuclei to pick up a charge during the interaction. We report here new measurements, made in a wide range of targets, of the cross sections for charge-pickup of gold nuclei with energies of 10.6 GeV/nucleon, and of silver and krypton nuclei with energies between 1.4 and 0.5 GeV/nucleon. The excitation functions of these cross sections are discussed using all the measurements available to us and indicate that there are significant decreases in the cross sections as the energies increase. A weak target dependence is seen. Previously these cross sections have been reported to have a strong, approximately quadratic, dependence on the projectile mass. This conclusion has to be modified in the light of these new measurements. Instead, we suggest that the cross sections show a strong exponential dependence on either the fractional neutron excesses or, equivalently, on the neutron to nucleon ratios of the projectile nuclei.
The proton/electron telescope (PET) on SAMPEX (Solar, Anomalous, and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer) is designed to provide measurements of energetic electrons and light nuclei from solar, Galactic, and magnetospheric sources. PET is an all solid-state system that will measure the differential energy spectra of electrons from ~1 to ~30 MeV and H and He nuclei from ~20 to ~300 MeV/nucleon, with isotope resolution of H and He extending from ~20 to ~80 MeV/nucleon. As SAMPEX scans all local times and geomagnetic cutoffs over the course of its near-polar orbit, PET will characterize precipitating relativistic electron events during periods of declining solar activity, and it will examine whether the production rate of odd nitrogen and hydrogen molecules in the middle atmosphere by precipitating electrons is sufficient to affect O_3 depletion. In addition, PET will complement studies of the elemental and isotopic composition of energetic heavy (Z>2) nuclei on SAMPEX by providing measurements of H, He, and electrons. Finally, PET has limited capability to identify energetic positrons from potential natural and man-made sources.",

In addition the light emission is shown to be
linear to a good approximation with dE/dx over this charge range.",

The observations are unique in that clean, statistically well-measured abundances are available for heavy ions for an unusually large flare. For elements with low First Ionization Potential (FIP), these results show the same correlation of relative abundances
with the ion charge to mass ratio as the earlier Voyager observations of solar energetic particles 1 . After correction for selection on the basis of this charge to mass ratio, the abundances of all the elements measured
show the expected step-function correlation with FIP, when compared to the spectroscopic photspheric abundances.
Relativistic iron, lanthanum, holmium, and gold projectile nuclei with several different energies have been fragmented in targets of polyethylene, carbon, aluminum, copper, and lead. Our detectors cleanly resolve the individual charges of the heaviest of these fragments and provide some limited information on the masses. We have measured 1256 elemental partial cross sections for the production of fragments from interactions in these target materials. Values have been derived for another 417 cross sections in a hydrogen medium. These cross sections depend on the energy and mass of the projectile nuclei as well as on the nature of the target. Total charge-changing cross sections were also found, but only in a composite target, and have been shown to be weakly dependent on energy. The mean mass losses observed for fragments that have lost a few protons show that typically many neutrons are lost with each proton, producing fragment nuclei that must be highly proton rich, and consequently very unstable. The cross sections for charge pickup on heavy targets show a rapid increase with decreasing energy, particularly for the heaviest targets. The systematics of the dependencies of the partial cross sections will be discussed in a companion paper.
Measurements of the partial charge-changing cross sections for the fragmentation of relativistic iron, lanthanum, holmium, and gold nuclei of several different energies incident on targets of polyethylene, carbon, aluminum, and copper have been reported in an accompanying paper. This paper describes the systematics of the variations of these cross sections with energy, projectile, target, and fragment. We have been able to generate a seven-parameter global fit to 795 measured cross sections for the heavy targets which fits the data with a standard deviation of 7%. We have also generated a similar global fit to 303 measured cross sections for a hydrogen target which fits the data with a standard deviation of 10%. These representations imply that the hypothesis of limiting fragmentation is only accurate to some 20–30 %. Weak factorization can apply, but fits that are marginally better, and more physically plausible, can be obtained without factorization. We have identified, and discussed, a number of caveats to the applicability of these fits outside, and inside, the range of energies and masses covered. Excessively large cross sections for the loss of a single proton from the projectile nuclei suggest electromagnetic dissociation. The cross sections for fragments that experience large charge changes appear to become independent of the size of the charge change. Very heavy projectiles have a significant probability of experiencing fission.
The Large Isotope Spectrometer for Astromag (LISA) is an experiment designed to measure the isotopic composition and energy spectra of cosmic rays for elements extending from beryllum through zinc. The overall objectives of this investigation are to study the origin and evolution of galactic matter; the acceleration, transport, and time scales of comsic rays in the galaxy; and search for heavy antinuclei in the cosmic radiation.
To achieve these objectives the LISA experiment will make the first identifications of individual heavy cosmic ray isotopes in the energy range from about 2.5 to 4 GeV/n where relativistic time dilation effects enhance the abundances of radioactive clocks and where the effects of solar modulation and cross‐section variations are minimized. It will extend high resolution measurements of individual element abundances and their energy spectra to energies of nearly 1 TeV/n, and has the potential for discovering heavy anti‐nuclei which could not have been formed except in extra‐galactic sources.
We have examined the fragmentation of relativistic iron, lanthanum, holmium and gold
nuclei with energies between 500 and 1200 MeV/n incident on targets of polyethylene, carbon,
aluminum, copper and lead. We have determined 1,256 elemental partial cross sections for the
production of fragments from interactions in pure target materials. Deduced values have been
found for another 417 cross sections in a hydrogen medium. The dependencies of these cross
sections on energy, mass and charge have been studied. We have generated a seven parameter
global fit to the cross sections for the heavy targets which fits a significant range of the data with
a standard deviation of 7%. We have also generated a similar global fit to the cross sections for
the hydrogen target which fits a slightly smaller range of the data with a standard deviation of
10%. These representations show that weak factorization can apply, but slightly better fits can
be obtained without it. The mean mass losses observed for fragments that have lost a few
protons, show that typically three or more neutrons are lost with each proton, producing
fragment nuclei that must be highly proton rich, and consequently very unstable
We report here an analysis that, for the first time, systematically normalizes the data from the HEAO 3
Heavy Nuclei Experiment on .the cosmic-ray abundances of all the elements heavier than germanium to that
of .iron. In the range of atomic number Z, 33 ≤Z ≤60, the analysis yields abundances of odd-even element pairs. These abundances are consistent with a cosmic-ray source having a composition similar to that of the solar system, but subject to source fractionation correlated with the first ionization potential (FIP) of each element. For Z > 60, the analysis yields abundances of element groups. For these heaviest nuclei, we find an enhancement of the abundance of the platinum group, elements with 74 ≤ Z ≤ 80, relative to that in a propagated solar system source, and a corresponding increase in the abundance of the largely secondary elements in the range 62 ≤ Z ≤ 73. These abundances suggest that there is an enhancement of the r-process contribution to the source nuclei in the Z > 60 charge region. Over the entire region of charge, standard leaky box models of propagation satisfactorily model secondary production.
We have examined the fragmentation of relativistic lanthanum and gold nuclei incident on targets of polyethylene, carbon, aluminum, and copper. Attention has been concentrated on those fragments whose atomic numbers were only changed by +1 to -3 from those of the incident nuclei. The cross section for the production of fragments with increased charge is about 10% that for fragments that have lost one charge, or about 1% of the total interaction cross section. We find that the velocity distributions of these fragments can be explained by assuming that they also lose significant numbers of neutrons when they pick up or lose charge, without a need to invoke any energy or momentum loss in the interaction, although we cannot exclude small losses. In particular, we cannot confirm the recent report of large energy losses during the charge pickup process. The relative numbers of neutrons lost can be represented by a simple Gaussian model, and, for those fragments with decreased charge, are much larger than the proton losses. These fragments consequently have large proton excesses and will be highly unstable.
We have examined relativistic nuclei of krypton, xenon, holmium, and gold, accelerated in a partially stripped state to a maximum rigidity of about 5.6 GeV, interacting with targets of aluminum, carbon, and polyethylene. For each projectile and target combination we determined the total and partial charge changing cross sections for the production of lighter fragments. From these measurements we have developed a new representation of the dependence of the total charge changing cross sections on beam and target charge. We have also identified simple representations of the variation of the partial cross sections with the charge of the produced fragments and shown that they are dependent on the charge and energy of the beam. The fission of gold nuclei at high energies in these various targets has also been studied.
The anisotropy of cosmic ray iron observed by the Heavy Nuclei Experiment
[1] on the HEA0-3 spacecraft has been studied. A high rigidity data set was
chosen by requiring the Stoermer cutoff be greater than 7 GV, and the energy of
individual events was determined by relativistic rise in the ion chamber signal [2].
Events which have estimated rigidity well above their Stoermer cutoff rigidity
were chosen in order to reduce the effect of the geomagnetic field on the cosmic
ray trajectories. Selecting events with estimated rigidity greater than ~58 GV
from eight months of data yields 2459 events. This data set allows an anisotropy
measurement with a statistical uncertainty of 3%. We will continue to try
increasing the size. of the selected data set while limiting systematic errors due to
the geomagnetic and interplanetary fields.
We shall report results from a calibration of a set of high-resolution ionization
chambers and Cherenkov counters at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory
Bevalac, in November 1986. We obtained exposures to beams of 26Fe, 57La, 67Ho,
and 79Au, at several diffyfent energies, ranging from -300 MeV/amu to a maximum
between 1 and 1.6 Ge V lamu. The detectors were basically similar to those used in
the HEA0-3 HNE (Binns et al. 1981) and these exposures were intended to calibrate
the response of the HNE detectors to UH nuclei in the cosmic radiation.
For nuclei of low .atomic number (Z), the response of these detectors scales like
Z2; however, at high Z this scaling is expected to break down (Ahlen 1980,1982;
Derrickson et til. 1981).",

In these runs we used beams of iron, lanthanum and gold nuclei at a number of
different energies interacting in targets of polyethylene, carbon, aluminum and copper. These
runs will allow us to study the energy dependence of the cross-sections over the limited range
of energies available at the Bevalac. As a result
we expect to be able to make determinations of all the cross-sections needed to make
comparisons with the earlier data.
Analysis of a new, higher resolution data set from the Heavy Nuclei Experiment on
the HEA0-3 spacecraft has yielded the cosmic ray abundances relative to iron of oddeven
element pairs with atomic number, Z, in the range 33≤Z≤60. The abundances are
consistent with a solar-system source provided an allowance is made for a source
fraetionation based on first ionization potential (FIP). However, extending this analysis·
to element groups with Z>60, we find enhancements of the Pt group (74≤Z≤80)
abundance relative to the solar system and a corresponding increase in the largely
secondary nuclei in the range 62≤Z≤73, in agreement with recent Ariel-6 results. These
abundances suggest an enhancement of the r-process contribution to the source of the
Z > 60 nuclei.
The HEAO-3 Heavy Nuclei Experiment has measured abundances of elements from ^(18)Ar to ^(92)U in the cosmic rays. The results of the ultraheavy elements, those with atomic numbers greater than 30, indicate that the sources of cosmic rays contain a mixture of r-process and s-process material similar to that found in the solar system. This result is at variance with previous indications that the sources are greatly enhanced with freshly synthesized r-process material. Apparent discrepancies between our results and the accepted solar-system abundances have led to a re-examination of data on photospheric abundances of Ge and Pb, resulting in suggested reductions in their values.
From an analysis of 580 days of exposure of the Heavy Nuclei Experiment on the HEAO 3 spacecraft, we have selected 322 nuclei with reasonable charge resolution, E ≥ 1.3 GeV n^(-1) and Z ≥ 50. These data show a defined abundance peak in the "platinum" (74 ≤ Z ≤ 80) region, a small abundance of "lead" (81 ≤ Z ≤ 83), and a significant number of "secondary" nuclei in the 62 ≤ Z ≤ 73 range. The deduced ratio in space of 0.25 ± 0.09 for "Pb/Pt" is distinctly lower than that predicted by any of the standard models for cosmic-ray sources and propagation effects. Although this low ratio suggests an enrichment in the cosmic-ray source of products of r-process nucleosynthesis, it may rather be an indication that the Pb abundance is suppressed by a source fractionation effect, or that there is less Pb in the solar system than is assumed in the standard compilations.",

Correlations of these ratios with first-ionization potential (FIP) and the expected mass-to-charge ratio (A/Q) of the elements in a million-degree plasma are analyzed. The FIP correlation was examined and it is shown that the correlation is affected by the choice of C2 or C1 chondritic meteorites as the solar-system standard for comparison. An A/Q correlation is suggested as a consequence of the shock acceleration model in the hot interstellar medium. The correlations are presented.
Over the past few years, we have been analyzing the
HEAO-3 measurements of the abundances of ultra-heavy cosmic ray nuclei
(Z>26) at earth. In order to interpret these abundances in terms of a
source composition, allowance must be made for the propagation of the
nuclei in the interstellar medium. Vital to any calculation of the
propagation is a knowledge of the total and partial interaction cross
sections for these heavy nuclei on hydrogen. Until recently, data on
such reactions have been scarce, and we have relied on the semiempirical
formalism of Silberberg and Tsao to predict the partial cross
sections. However, now that relativistic heavy ion beams are available
at the LBL Bevalac, some of the cross sections of interest can be
measured at energies close to those of the cosmic ray nuclei being
observed.",

During analysis, each particle is assigned two parameters, Zc and Zi, proportional to the square roots of the Cerenkov and mean ionization signals respectively. Because the ionization signal is double valued, a unique assignment of particle charge, Z, is not possible in general. Previous work was limited to particles of either high rigidity or low energy, for which a unique charge assignment was possible, although those subsets contain less than 50% of the total number of particles observed. The maximum likelihood technique was used to determine abundances for the complete data set from approx. 1.5 to approx. 80 GeV/amu.
The elemental composition of the cosmic-ray source is different from that which has been generally taken as the composition of the solar system. No general enrichment of products of either r-process or s-process nucleosynthesis accounts for the differences over the entire range of ultraheavy (Z > 30) elements; specific determination of nucleosynthetic contributions to the differences depends upon an understanding of the nature of any acceleration fractionation. Comparison between the cosmic-ray source abundances and the abundances of C1 and C2 chondritic meteorites suggests the possibility that differences between the cosmic-ray source and the "standard (C1) solar system" may not be due to acceleration fractionation of the cosmic rays, but may be due instead to a fractionation of the C1 abundances with respect to the interstellar abundances.
A combination of ion chambers and Cerenkov radiators similar to the Heavy Nuclei Experiment flown on HEAO-3 was calibrated at the Bevalac heavy-ion accelerator using beams of Mn-25 nuclei at kinetic energies up to about 1700 MeV/nucleon and Au-79 nuclei up to about 1000 MeV/nucleon. The data show only a small deviation (about 2-3 charge units at Au) from the Z^2 scaling used previously (Binns et al., 1981, 1982, 1983) to analyze the HNE data. Although at lower energy, the calibration indicates that the published relative abundances of the _(50)Sn/_(56)Ba group and the published upper-limit actinide abundances are not likely to be significantly affected by non-Z^2 effects.",

The elements with atomic number (Z) in the intervals 44 < Z < 48 and 62 < Z < 74 arriving at earth are expected to have significant secondary components.
The relative abundances of elements in the charge ranges of 75 ≤ Z ≤ 79 (platinum) and 80 ≤ Z ≤ 83 (lead) should be a sensitive indication of the contributions of the r- and s-processes in nucleosynthesis. Data from the HEAO 3 Heavy Nuclei Experiment are used to establish abundances, relative to iron, of these elements in the cosmic radiation, as well as the ratio of 'secondary' elements, in the 62 ≤ Z ≤ 74 range, to the primary lead-platinum elements. These results appear to suggest that either the source abundances are deficient in s-process elements or that they are not organized solely by first ionization potential. In addition, present propagation models can adequately represent the relative abundances of primary and secondary elements.
Results from the cosmic-ray system on Voyager 2 in Saturn's magnetosphere are presented. During the inbound pass through the outer magnetosphere, the ≥ 0.43-million-electron-volt proton flux was more intense, and both the proton and electron fluxes were more variable, than previously observed. These changes are attributed to the influence on the magnetosphere of variations in the solar wind conditions. Outbound, beyond 18 Saturn radii, impulsive bursts of 0.14- to > 1.0- million-electron-volt electrons were observed. In the inner magnetosphere, the charged particle absorption signatures of Mimas, Enceladus, and Tethys are used to constrain the possible tilt and offset of Saturn's internal magnetic dipole. At ∼ 3 Saturn radii, a transient decrease was observed in the electron flux which was not due to Mimas. Characteristics of this decrease suggest the existence of additional material, perhaps another satellite, in the orbit of Mimas.
Voyager 1 provided the first look at Saturn's magnetotail and magnetosphere during relatively quiet interplanetary conditions. This report discusses the energetic particle populations of the outer magnetosphere of Saturn and absorption features associated with Titan and Rhea, and compares these observations with Pioneer 11 data of a year earlier. The trapped proton fluxes had soft spectra, represented by power laws E^–γ in kinetic energy E, with γ ∼ 7 in the outer magnetosphere and γ ∼ 9 in the magnetotail. Structure associated with the magnetotial was observed as close as 10 Saturn radii (Rs) on the outbound trajectory. The proton and electron fluxes in the outer magnetosphere and in the magnetotail were variable and appeared to respond to changes in interplanetary conditions. Protons with energies ≥ 2 million electron volts had free access to the magnetosphere from interplanetary space and were not stably trapped outside ∼ 7.5 Rs.",

These results are confined to the heavy nuclei with Z ≥ 50 and emphasize the conclusions obtained on the relative numbers of actinides and heavy stable elements in the lead-platinum region. The extreme paucity of actinides found is inconsistent with the predictions of a cosmic ray source that is highly enriched in r-process material, but quite consistent with a source whose composition is similar to that of normal solar system material. An upper limit, at the. 95% confidence level, is placed in the ratio of nuclei with Z ≥ 88/(74 ≤ Z ≤87) of 0.03.
The Voyager 2 encounter has enhanced our understanding of earlier results and provided measurements beyond 160 Jupiter radii (RJ) in the magnetotail. Significant fluxes of energetic sulfur and oxygen nuclei (4 to 15 million electron volts per nucleon) of Jovian origin were observed inside 25 RJ, and the gradient in phase space density at 12 RJ indicates that the ions are diffusing inward. A substantially longer time delay versus distance was found for proton flux maxima in the active hemisphere in the magnetotail at Jovicentric longitudes λIII, = 260° to 320° than in the inactive hemisphere at λIII, = 85° to l10°. These delays can be related to the radial motion of plasma expanding into the magnetotail, and differences in the expansion speeds between the active and inactive hemispheres can produce rarefaction regions in trapped particles. It is suggested that the 10-hour modulation of interplanetary Jovian electrons may be associated with the arrival at the dawn magnetopause of a rarefaction region each planetary rotation.
Abstract. The Voyager 2 encounter has enhanced our understanding of earlier
results and provided measurements beyond 160 Jupiter radii (RJ) in the magnetotail. Significant fluxes of energetic sulfur and oxygen nuclei (4 to 15 million electron volts per nucleon) of Jovian origin were observed inside 25R^j, and the gradient in phase space density at 12 R^J indicates that the ions are diffusing inward. A substantially longer time delay versus distance was found for proton flux maxima in the active
hemisphere in the magnetotail at Jovicentric longitudes Am = 260° to 320° than in the inactive hemisphere at Am = 85° to 110°. These delays can be related to the radial motion of plasma expanding into the magnetotail, and differences in the expansion speeds between the active and inactive hemispheres can produce rarefaction regions in trapped particles. It is suggested that the JO-hour modulation of interplanetary Jovian electrons may be associated with the arrival at the dawn magnetopause of a rarefaction region each planetary rotation.
The observations of the cosmic-ray subsystem have added significantly to our knowledge of Jupiter's magnetosphere. The most surprising result is the existence of energetic sulfur, sodium, and oxygen nuclei with energies above 7 megaelectron volts per nucleon which were found inside of Io's orbit. Also, significant fluxes of similarly energetic ions reflecting solar cosmic-ray composition were observed
throughout the magnetosphere beyond 11 times the radius of Jupiter. It was also found that energetic protons are enhanced by 30 to 70 percent in the active
hemisphere. Finally, the first observations were made of the magnetospheric tail in the dawn direction out to 160 Jupiter radii.",
