        "abstract": "<p>The focus of this project is the combined application of the methodologies of experimental&nbsp;petrology, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and stable isotope geochemistry to understanding&nbsp;the behavior of volatile components, particularly water and carbon dioxide, in natural&nbsp;and synthetic silicate melts and glasses. Our methodology has basically been the integration&nbsp;of (1) a laboratory component directed toward the development of techniques and a&nbsp;solid understanding of the physical chemistry of volatile components in melts and glasses&nbsp;through carefully controlled experiments and syntheses, and (2) a field-oriented component&nbsp;in which we have applied these techniques and chemical principles to specific&nbsp;petrological and volcanological problems. Funding has been specifically directed toward&nbsp;facilitating a collaboration between the two P.I.'s and to joint work that combines their&nbsp;different expertises in petrology (Stolper) and stable isotope geochemistry (Epstein).</p>",
