        "abstract": "We determine the low-redshift X-ray luminosity function (XLF), active black hole mass function (BHMF), and Eddington-ratio distribution function (ERDF) for both unobscured (Type 1) and obscured (Type 2) active galactic nuclei (AGN) using the unprecedented spectroscopic completeness of the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) data release 2. In addition to a straightforward 1/Vmax approach, we also compute the intrinsic distributions, accounting for sample truncation by employing a forward modeling approach to recover the observed BHMF and ERDF. As previous BHMFs and ERDFs have been robustly determined only for samples of bright, broad-line (Type 1) AGNs and/or quasars, ours is the first directly observationally constrained BHMF and ERDF of Type 2 AGN. We find that after accounting for all observational biases, the intrinsic ERDF of Type 2 AGN is significantly skewed towards lower Eddington ratios than the intrinsic ERDF of Type 1 AGN. This result supports the radiation-regulated unification scenario, in which radiation pressure dictates the geometry of the dusty obscuring structure around an AGN. Calculating the ERDFs in two separate mass bins, we verify that the derived shape is consistent, validating the assumption that the ERDF (shape) is mass independent. We report the local AGN duty cycle as a function of mass and Eddington ratio, by comparing the BASS active BHMF with the local mass function for all SMBH. We also present the log N-log S of Swift-BAT 70-month sources.",

        "abstract": "CMOS detectors offer many advantages over CCDs for optical and UV astronomical applications, especially in space where high radiation tolerance is required. However, astronomical instruments are most often designed for low light-level observations demanding low dark current and read noise, good linearity and high dynamic range, characteristics that have not been widely demonstrated for CMOS imagers. We report the performance, over temperatures from 140 - 240 K, of a radiation hardened SRI 4Kx2K back-side illuminated CMOS image sensor with surface treatments that make it highly sensitive in blue and UV bands. After suppressing emission from glow sites resulting from defects in the engineering grade device examined in this work, a 0.077 me\u207b/s dark current floor is reached at 160 K, rising to 1 me\u207b/s at 184 K, rivaling that of the best CCDs. We examine the trade-off between readout speed and read noise, finding that 1.43 e\u207b median read noise is achieved using line-wise digital correlated double sampling at 700 kpix/s/ch corresponding to a 1.5 s readout time. The 15 ke\u207b well capacity in high gain mode extends to 120 ke\u207b in dual gain mode. Continued collection of photo-generated charge during readout enables a further dynamic range extension beyond 10\u2076 e\u207b effective well capacity with only 1% loss of exposure efficiency by combining short and long exposures. A quadratic fit to correct for non-linearity reduces gain correction residuals from 1.5% to 0.2% in low gain mode and to 0.4% in high gain mode. Cross-talk to adjacent pixels is only 0.4% vertically, 0.6% horizontally and 0.1% diagonally. These characteristics plus the relatively large 10 \u03bcm pixel size, quasi 4-side buttability, electronic shutter and sub-array readout make this sensor an excellent choice for wide field astronomical imaging in space, even at FUV wavelengths where sky background is very low.",

        "abstract": "M82 X-2 is the first pulsating ultraluminous X-ray source (PULX) discovered. The luminosity of these extreme pulsars, if isotropic, implies an extreme mass transfer rate. An alternative is to assume a much lower mass transfer rate, but an apparent luminosity boosted by geometrical beaming. Only an independent measurement of the mass transfer can help discriminate between these two scenarios. In this Paper, we follow the orbit of the neutron star for seven years, measure the decay of the orbit, and demonstrate that this orbital decay is driven by extreme mass transfer of more than 150 times the mass transfer limit set by the Eddington luminosity. This measurement shows that the mass available to the accretor is more than enough to justify its luminosity, with no need for beaming. This also strongly favors models where the accretor is a highly-magnetized neutron star.",

        "abstract": "We present here the updated calibration of The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray NuSTAR, which was performed using data on the Crab accumulated over the last 9 years in orbit. The basis for this new calibration contains over 250ks of focused Crab (imaged through the optics) and over 500ks of stray-light Crab (not imaged through optics). We measured an epoch averaged Crab spectrum of the stray-light Crab data and define a canonical Crab spectrum of \u0393 = 2.103 \u00b1 0.001 and N = 9.69 \u00b1 0.02 keV\u207b\u00b9 cm\u207b\u00b2 s\u207b\u00b9 at 1 keV, which we use as our calibration standard. The new calibration, released in the CALDB update 20211020, provides significant updates to: 1) the detector absorption component, 2) the detector response function, and 3) the effective area vignetting function. The calibration improves agreement between FPMA and FPMB across detectors with a standard deviation of 1.7% for repeat observations between off-axis angles of 1-4 arcmin, and the measured flux has increased by 5-15%, with 5% below 1 arcmin off-axis angle, 10% between 1-2 arcmin, and 15 above 4arcmin.",

        "abstract": "We present the full panchromatic afterglow light curve data of GW170817, including new radio data as well as archival optical and X-ray data, between 0.5 and 940 days post-merger. By compiling all archival data, and reprocessing a subset of it, we have ensured that the panchromatic dataset is uniform and therefore immune to the differences in data processing or flux determination methods used by different groups. Simple power-law fits to the uniform afterglow light curve indicate a t^(0.86\u00b10.04) rise, a t^(\u22121.90\u00b10.12) decline, and a peak occurring at 155\u00b14 days. The afterglow is optically thin throughout its evolution, consistent with a single spectral index (\u22120.569\u00b10.002) across all epochs. This gives a precise and updated estimate of the electron power-law index, p=2.138\u00b10.004. By studying the diffuse X-ray emission from the host galaxy, we place a conservative upper limit on the hot ionized ISM density, &lt;0.01 cm\u207b\u00b3, consistent with previous afterglow studies. Using the late-time afterglow data we rule out any long-lived neutron star remnant having magnetic field strength between 10^(10.4) G and 10\u00b9\u2076 G. Our fits to the afterglow data using an analytical model that includes VLBI proper motion from Mooley et al (2018), and a structured jet model that ignores the proper motion, indicates that the proper motion measurement needs to be considered while seeking an accurate estimate of the viewing angle.",

        "abstract": "A rip in the MLI at the exit aperture of OMA, the NuSTAR optic aligned with detector focal plane module FPMA, has resulted in an increased photon flux through OMA that has manifested itself as a low energy excess. Overall, the MLI coverage has decreased by 10%, but there is an additional time-varying component, which occasionally causes the opening to increase by up to 20%. We address the problem with a calibration update, and in this paper, we describe the attributes of the problem, the implications it has on data analysis, and the solution.",

        "abstract": "Theory suggests that there are two primary modes of accretion through which dark matter halos acquire the gas to form and fuel galaxies, hot and cold mode accretion. In cold mode accretion, gas streams along cosmic web filaments to the center of the halo, allowing for the efficient delivery of star-forming fuel. Recently, two QSO-illuminated HI Lyman alpha (Ly{\\alpha}) emitting objects were reported to have properties of cold, rotating structures (Martin et al. 2015, Martin et al. 2016). However, the spatial and spectral resolution available was insufficient to constrain radial flows associated with connecting filaments. With the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) we now have eight times the spatial resolution, permitting the detection of these in-spiraling flows. In order to detect these inflows, we introduce a suite of models which incorporate zonal radial flows, demonstrate their performance on a numerical simulation that exhibits coldflow accretion, and show that they are an excellent match to KCWI velocity maps of two Ly{\\alpha} emitters observed around high-redshift quasars. These Multi-Filament Inflow models kinematically isolate zones of radial inflow that correspond to extended filamentary emission. The derived gas flux and inflow path is sufficient to fuel the inferred central galaxy star formation rate and angular momentum. Thus, our kinematic emission maps provide strong evidence for the inflow of gas from the cosmic web building galaxies at the peak of star formation.",

        "abstract": "We have obtained the energy spectra of cosmic ray He, B, C, O, Mg, S and Fe nuclei in the range 0.5-1.5 GeV/nuc and above using the penetrating particle mode of the High Energy Telescope, part of the Cosmic Ray Science (CRS) experiment on Voyagers 1 and 2. The data analysis procedures are the same as those used to obtain similar spectra from the identical V2 HET telescope while it was in the heliosphere between about 23 and 54 AU. The time period of analysis includes 4 years of data beyond the heliopause (HP). These new interstellar spectra are compared with various earlier experiments at the same energies at the Earth to determine the solar modulation parameter, \u03a6. These new spectra are also compared with recent measurements of the spectra of the same nuclei measured by the same telescope at low energies. It is found that the ratio of intensities at 100 MeV/nuc to those at 1.0 GeV/nuc are significantly Z dependent. Some of this Z dependence can be explained by the Z\u00b2 dependence of energy loss by ionization in the 7-10 g/cm\u00b2 of interstellar H and He traversed by cosmic rays of these energies in the galaxy; some by the Z dependent loss due to nuclear interactions in this same material; some by possible differences in the source spectra of these nuclei and some by the non-uniformity of the source distribution and propagation conditions. The observed features of the spectra, also including a Z dependence of the peak intensities of the various nuclei, pose interesting problems related to the propagation and source distribution of these cosmic rays.",

        "abstract": "We have determined the solar modulation potential, \u03a6, vs. time that is observed at Voyager 1 and 2 from measurements of the H and He nuclei intensities at a common energy of 250 MeVnuc. The H nuclei have a rigidity 0.7 GV, the He nuclei 1.4 GV. These measurements cover a 40 year time period, which includes almost 4 cycles of solar 11 year sunspot variations, throughout the inner heliosphere out to the HTS at distances of 95 AU and 85 AU, respectively at V1 and V2, and then beyond in the heliosheath. Inside the HTS the modulation potential vs. time curves at V1 and V2 show a very similar temporal structure to those observed at the Earth. During a later period of maximum solar modulation from 2000.0 to 2005.0 when V1 and V2 are in the outer heliosphere between 60-94 AU, the main temporal features of the modulation potential curves at all 3 locations match up with appropriate time delays at V1 and V2 if it is assumed that spatially coherent structures are moving outward past V1 and V2, with outward speeds of up to 700 Kms\u207b\u00b9. After 2004.0 V1 and V2 are at latitudes of +35\u00b0 and -30\u00b0 respectively, placing lower limits on the latitude extent of these structures. Beyond the HTS in the heliosheath the modulation potential slowly decreases at both spacecraft with only a weak evidence of the unusual modulation minimum observed at the Earth in 2009, for example. A sudden decrease of the modulation potential 50 MV for both H and He nuclei occurs at V1 just before the heliopause crossing at about 122 AU. This decrease has not yet been observed at V2, which is now at 113 AU and still observing a modulation potential 60 MV.",

        "abstract": "At the Voyager 1 spacecraft in the outer heliosphere, after a series of complex intensity changes starting at about May 8th, the intensities of both anomalous cosmic rays (ACR) and galactic cosmic rays (GCR) changed suddenly and decisively on August 25th (121.7 AU from the Sun). The ACR started the intensity decrease with an initial e-folding rate of intensity decrease of ~1 day. Within a matter of a few days, the intensity of 1.9-2.7 MeV protons and helium nuclei had decreased to less than 0.1 of their previous value and after a few weeks, corresponding to the outward movement of V1 by ~0.1 AU, these intensities had decreased by factors of at least 300-500 and are now lower than most estimates of the GCR spectrum for these lower energies and also at higher energies. The decrease was accompanied by large rigidity dependent anisotropies in addition to the extraordinary rapidity of the intensity changes. Also on August 25th the GCR protons, helium and heavier nuclei as well as electrons increased suddenly with the intensities of electrons reaching levels ~30-50% higher than observed just one day earlier. This increase for GCR occurred over ~1 day for the lowest rigidity electrons, and several days for the higher rigidity nuclei of rigidity ~0.5-1.0 GV. After reaching these higher levels the intensities of the GCR of all energies from 2 to 400 MeV have remained essentially constant with intensity levels and spectra that may represent the local GCR. These intensity changes will be presented in more detail in this, and future articles, as this story unfolds.",

        "abstract": "We have examined features in the structure of the heliosheath using the fine scale time variations of termination shock particles (TSP) between ~0.5 - 20 MeV and electrons between 2.5-14 MeV measured by the CRS instrument as the V2 spacecraft crossed the heliospheric termination shock in 2007. The very disturbed heliosheath at V2 is particularly noteworthy for strong periodic intensity variations of the TSP just after V2 crossed the termination shock (2007.66) reaching a maximum between 2007.75 and 2008.0. A series of 42/21 day periodicities was observed at V2 along with spectral changes of low energy TSP and the acceleration of 6-14 MeV electrons. Evidence is presented for the acceleration of TSP and electrons at the times of the 42/21 day periodicities just after V2 crossed the HTS. Spectra for TSP between 2-20 MeV and electrons between 2.5-14 MeV are derived for three time periods including the time of the HTS crossing. The energy spectra of TSP and electrons at these times of intensity peaks are very similar above ~3 MeV, with exponents of a power law spectrum between -3.0 and -3.6. The ratio of TSP intensities to electron intensities at the same energy is ~500. The electron intensity peaks and minima are generally out of phase with those of nuclei by ~1/2 of a 42 day cycle. These charge dependent intensity differences and the large periodic intensity changes could provide new clues as to a possible acceleration mechanism.",

        "abstract": "The recovery of cosmic ray Carbon nuclei of energy ~20-125 MeV/nuc in solar cycle #23 from 2004 to 2010 has been followed at three locations, near the Earth using ACE data and at V2 between 74-92 AU and also at V1 beyond the heliospheric termination shock at between 91-113 AU. To describe the observed intensity changes and to predict the absolute intensities measured at all three locations we have used a simple spherically symmetric (no drift) two-zone heliospheric transport model with specific values for the diffusion coefficient in both the inner and outer zones. The diffusion coefficient in the outer zone is determined to be ~5-10 times smaller than that in the inner zone out to 90 AU. For both V1 and V2 the calculated C nuclei intensities agree within an average of \u00b110% with the observed intensities. Because of this agreement between V1 and V2 observations and predictions there is no need to invoke an asymmetrical squashed heliosphere or other effects to explain the V2 intensities relative to V1 as is the case for He nuclei. The combination of the diffusion parameters used in this model and the interstellar spectrum give an unusually low overall solar modulation parameter \u03a6 = 250 MV to describe the Carbon intensities observed at the Earth in 2009. At all times both the observed and calculated spectra are very closely ~ E^(1.0) as would be expected in the adiabatic energy loss regime of solar modulation.",

        "abstract": "Studies of the cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and their host galaxies are starting to provide interesting or even unique new insights in observational cosmology. GRBs represent a new way of identifying a population of star-forming galaxies at cosmological redshifts. GRB hosts are broadly similar to the normal field galaxy populations at comparable redshifts and magnitudes, and indicate at most a mild luminosity evolution out to z ~ 1.5 - 2. GRB optical afterglows seen in absorption provide a powerful new probe of the ISM in dense, central regions of their host galaxies, complementary to the traditional studies using QSO absorbers. Some GRB hosts are heavily obscured, and provide a new way to select a population of cosmological sub-mm sources, and a novel constraint on the total obscured fraction of star formation over the history of the universe. Finally, detection of GRB afterglows at z &gt; 6 may provide a unique way to probe the primordial star formation, massive IMF, early IGM, and chemical enrichment at the end of the cosmic reionization era.",

        "abstract": "As a scientific discipline, Astronomy is rather unique. We only have one laboratory, the Universe, and we cannot, of course, change the initial conditions and study the resulting effects. On top of this, acquiring Astronomical data has historically been a very labor-intensive effort. As a result, data has traditionally been preserved for posterity. With recent technological advances, however, the rate at which we acquire new data has grown exponentially, which has generated a Data Tsunami, whose wave train threatens to overwhelm the field. In this conference proceedings, we present and define the concept of virtual observatories, which we feel is the only logical answer to this dilemma.",

        "abstract": "GriPhyN (Grid Physics Network) is a large US collaboration to\nbuild grid services for large physics experiments, one of which is LIGO, a\ngravitational-wave observatory. This paper explains the physics and computing\nchallenges of LIGO, and the tools that GriPhyN will build to address\nthem. A key component needed to implement the data pipeline is a virtual\ndata service; a system to dynamically create data products requested during\nthe various stages. The data could possibly be already processed in a certain\nway, it may be in a file on a storage system, it may be cached, or it may need\nto be created through computation. The full elaboration of this system will al-low\ncomplex data pipelines to be set up as virtual data objects, with existing\ndata being transformed in diverse ways.",

        "abstract": "We summarize the quiescent X-ray observations of transient low-mass X-ray binaries. These observations show that, in quiescence, binaries containing black holes are fainter than those containing neutron stars. This has triggered a number of theoretical ideas about what causes the quiescent X-ray emission. For black hole binaries, the options are accretion onto the black hole or coronal emission from the rapidly rotating stellar companion. There are more possibilities for the neutron stars: accretion, thermal emission from the surface or non-thermal emission from a \"turned-on\" radio pulsar. We review recent theoretical work on these mechanisms and note where current observations can distinguish between them. We highlight the re-analysis of the quiescent neutron star emission by Rutledge and collaborators that showed thermal emission to be a predominant contributor in many of these systems. Our knowledge of these binaries is bound to dramatically improve now that the Chandra and XMM satellites are operating successfully.",

        "abstract": "We motivate and define the XSIL language as a flexible, hierarchical, extensible transport language for scientific data objects. The entire object may be represented in the file, or there may be metadata in the XSIL file, with a powerful, fault-tolerant linking mechanism to external data. The language is based on XML, and is designed not only for parsing and processing by machines, but also for presentation to humans through web browsers and web-database technology. There is a natural mapping between the elements of the XSIL language and the object model into which they are translated by the parser. As well as common objects (Parameter, Array, Time, Table), we have extended XSIL to include the IGWDFrame, used by gravitational-wave observatories.",

The autonomous spacecraft carried out complex observational sequences of Jupiter and Saturn and their rings, satellites, and magnetospheres. A brief overview of some of the discoveries about the Saturnian system is presented.",
