        "abstract": "Long optical storage times are an essential requirement to establish high-rate entanglement distribution over large distances using memory-based quantum repeaters. Rare earth ion-doped crystals are arguably well-suited candidates for building such quantum memories. Toward this end, we investigate the 795.32 nm \u00b3H\u2086 \u2194 \u00b3H\u2084 transition of 1% thulium-doped yttrium gallium garnet crystal (Tm\u00b3\u207a:Y\u2083Ga\u2085O\u2081\u2082 : Tm\u00b3\u207a:YGG). Most essentially, we find that the optical coherence time can reach 1.1 ms, and, using laser pulses, we demonstrate optical storage based on the atomic frequency comb (AFC) protocol up to 100 \u00b5s. In addition, we demonstrate multiplexed storage, including feed-forward selection, shifting, and filtering of spectral modes, as well as quantum state storage using members of non-classical photon pairs. Our results show that Tm:YGG can be a potential candidate for creating multiplexed quantum memories with long optical storage times.",

        "abstract": "In large networked systems, a sudden increase in traffic could slowdown the network significantly, impacting network quality for multiple users. We present Diolkos, a system that leverages smart switches to dynamically re-reroute data flows in response to drops in performance. In contrast to other techniques, our tool predicts the future throughput at each port in a switch if a data flow were to be sent through it, and updates which port should be taken to maximize throughput. We use several techniques to predict network switch performance on a software defined network (SDN) mimicking topologies commonly found in datacenters. Experimentally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of choosing a port to send flows through based on predicted performance. We found that using a distributed predictive technique achieves a 24% improvement over using a traditional heuristic technique.",

        "abstract": "Taking advantage of the strong piezoelectricity of lithium niobate (LN) and the high-quality (Q) -factor acoustic resonator around 3 GHz, on-chip microwave-to-optical conversion is demonstrated by our integrated acousto-optic Mach-Zehnder modulator on suspended LN thin film. Our devices achieve microwave-to-acoustic coupling efficiencies of 90%, and the half-wave voltage of V\u03c0=3.9 V for only a 400-\u03bcm modulation length at the telecommunication optical wavelength. This result gives the half-wave-voltage-length product V\u03c0L, the figure of merit for optical modulator, as low as 0.15 V\u00b7cm, which is a 10-fold reduction over the start-of-the-art electro-optic modulators. In addition, our acoustic device demonstrates an acoustic Q factor of 3,600 at 3.3 GHz that results in a start-of-the-art acoustic frequency-quality product of fQ = 10\u00b9\u00b3 at room-temperature.",
